Is this name too “out there”?

Having third baby in March, 2nd girl. First girl is Calla.
Initially we liked Alana (ah-lan-uh)

But I know far too many Alaina’s (all variations: Elena, Alayna, etc), Alana’s, Alina’s (Aleena)… everything is just so similar..

I saw a name yesterday I’ve never heard of.. I’ve heard of “Alora”, but this was “Alara”. I thought it was so pretty. It’s ranked in the top 600s… so I’m assuming it’s “heard of”. But is it too out there?

It’s a nice enough name, but it feels a bit like one of those Aldi/Lidl made-up clothing/kitchenware brands. Sweet but bland.

I know an Alaria.
I love Alana / Alannah / Alanah
It means darling in Irish.

It is a term of endearment but it means child.

Yes. It comes from ‘A leanbh’.

Laura. Sorted.

Yeah, because that looks/sounds just the same Grin

TuxedoPark · 26/10/2026 12:07

I wouldn’t have two names which are so reliant on ‘a’ and ‘l’.

CrystalSingerFan · 26/10/2026 12:10

I've got a relative called Cobweb. (Perfectly good Shakespearian name.) None of these suggestions seem 'out there' so far, IMO.

Well, it’s a fairy’s name, along with Mustardseed and Peaseblossom, so I’m not sure Shakespeare expected us to think it was a ‘perfectly good’ human name.

Doveyouknow · 26/10/2026 12:22

I have heard it before - I live in an area with a big Turkish population and it's a common Turkish name - so wouldn't consider it out there. I prefer Alana though. Does it matter if it's not unique? Surely you should just choose the name you prefer.

I’m not sure Shakespeare gave a rat's ass.
I wouldn't judge someone for calling their kid this. I've too many better things to worry about, personally.

Well, you’re the one who brought it up!

Eh? No I'm not.

Nothingy and meh. Laura and Lara are far nicer.

JoyousWriter · 26/10/2026 13:54

Alora sounds halfway between alarm and Flora margarine.

MeridaBrave · 26/10/2026 14:14

I know many women called Ilana or for boys Ilan. Never heard of Alara.

MyFavouriteGame · 26/10/2026 14:56

How many of these Alainas etc are you going to know in ten years? I like Alana. I know two grown up ones, never met an Alora.

Flora is lovely but Alora and Alara look like as pp made up middle-of-lidl/aldi brands.
(Shame Flora is now associated with a non-dairy spread. That's not lovely.)

I love Alannah too but op it’s A-la-na not A-lan-uh.

It depends where you’re from. I know an A lan uh and an A la na.

I'd say it as Al-ANN-a but others won't. Uh-LAR-nuh isn't very nice, and that is how it would get said where I live.

Didimum · 26/10/2026 11:15

Surprised you’ve never heard of the name Alara. I know two Alaras. I like it very much and view it as a less common but pretty normal name.

I thought it was Elara.

Calliopespa · 26/10/2026 20:25

wandawaves · 26/10/2026 11:18

I know an Alara. Although actually I think it's Elara.
But I like it, it's pretty, and not too 'out there'.

Yes, I just posted the same: I think the name is Elara.

Dolly91 · 26/10/2026 20:26

AlwaysExtraHot · 26/10/2026 10:18

I like Alara. Who cares if some dull people think it's 'out there' or if some people who clearly can't spell/hear would think it was Alana?
If you like it, use it.

Agree with this completely.

Dolly91 · 26/10/2026 20:38

I know this isn’t the point of the thread but I do love the name Calla OP!

littlecreeature · 26/10/2026 20:41

We have an unusual name in our family tree that might suit your taste, I wasn’t brave enough to use it but did use another Al name. Aletta. Never heard of it apart from our family but quite like it.
