I am 23 weeks and we are torn between Savannah (the name I am leaning towards) and Riley (the name he’s leaning towards). My grandmother and mother’s names are Jane so middle name will be Jane. I really can’t decide which name I like better. Savannah Jane or Riley Jane. My partner has red hair, so we were thinking of waiting until the day we meet her and if she’s born with red hair, we go with Riley. If she’s born with brown hair or no hair we go with Savannah. Ugh it’s so hard!

Other names we’ve thrown around are:
Cheyenne
Hazel
Willow
Juniper
Daisy.

Why is this the hardest decision of my life

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Savannah is lovely.
It isn't. It's a grassy plain and Sav makes me think of Saveloy.

Altodela · 20/10/2026 21:54

Savannah is a lovely name!

StationJack · 20/10/2026 22:42

Chavannah

I like Savannah. I thought Riley was a boys name but I'm clearly wrong.

How is Cheyenne pronounced?
I also like your other suggestions.

Riley can be both, used to be more boys, but not necessarily now. In the Scream mini series there was a girl called it, and that was the first I heard it for a girl, but that was 11 years ago.
You seem to like nature type names OP. Hazel seems to have been quite popular in the 60s/70s, so it might be a good choice if you don't want her to be one of many in the class.

It's what I think. I probably won't be the only one.

Needmorelego · 20/10/2026 23:47

@StationJack Personally I pretty much think the opposite.
If we are going to stereotype names I think of Savannah as a more "posh" name. Don't know why - but that's the vibe I get.
I also think of the city in the USA which I have never been to but apparently is full of lots of history, beautiful architecture, is one of the oldest cities in the USA and was the birthplace of Juliette Gordon Low who was the founder of the Girl Scouts of America.
So to me any thoughts and associations when I hear the name are good ones.

ButtercupYellow26 · 21/10/2026 00:05

Riley is usually a boy's name.
Had you considered Susannah?

That's you, and it sounds like you are in or from the USA.
It sounds the opposite to me.

Place names are not generally seen favourably.
It's a bit frilly.
Sav is not very nice.
I'm not keen on nature names.

No I am not from or have ever been to the USA.
As for the "being posh" view - one of the late Queen Elizabeth II's great granddaughters is named Savannah.
You probably can't get posher than that 😂

I wouldn't describe Mia, Isla, Sienna or Savannah as posh. Peter Phillips' former wife was Canadian.

The royals aren't posh. Some of them seem quite sleazy.

Well the royals are rich, send their children to fancy boarding schools and own a lot of ponies.... that's "posh" in my view 😂😂
The four girl names are exactly the type of names I would imagine belonging to a group of girls at an all girls private school (if we are going by stereotypes).
I guess our view on names is completely the opposite way around.
We are all different really.
I personally prefer Riley anyway.

Your definition of posh is misguided.
Mia, Isla and Sienna sound like regular girl's names and could be in a school in a deprived area or a well-heeled area.

TrojanDonkey · 21/10/2026 11:03

Mia, Isla and Sienna are bog standard girl’s names that are everywhere. Less so Savannah. Don’t really hear that.

Yes they are perfectly normal regular pretty names.
You have based your personal thoughts on the name Savannah on a stereotype (by saying "Chavannah").
I have based my thoughts on a stereotype too. Everyone does that (internally at least).
However I also wouldn't bat an eyelid and anyone with those names regardless of what their background is.

StationJack · 21/10/2026 11:11

As I said, that's you.

Hoork · 21/10/2026 11:13

I love Riley I think it’s very nice, especially on a girl! Her hair colour may change though, my DD1 was born with red hair but it became brown and vice versa for DD2.

Pemba · 21/10/2026 12:43

Sorry, but Riley does sound more like a boy's name, and a bit rough too.

Savannah is fine, nothing wrong with it, but like pps said, why not Susannah? Gorgeous name.

Daisy and Hazel are really nice, from your list of alternatives.
