I love the name, but DP isn't sure. I think Merry is cute for a girl while Meredith is more grown up, and good for stern telling off's .

yes or no?

ps. My RL name is common as muck and it drives me mad so I am trying to find less common names for my DC's.

is it a surname? i always assumed was the prigin of edith

4madboys · 27/06/2008 22:09

this is the name we were going to use if ds4 had been a girl

so i think its a lovely name

meglet · 27/06/2008 22:09

actually it was the surname of my first years techer at junior school. She was very nice. I've heard it as first name and surname.

Be careful if you live in London/essex/herts, it will be Merediff.

It's alright, it's a bit, urm, stiff. I think its the -ith which is a bit 'edithy'

fishie · 27/06/2008 22:14

i have just realised that my ds name is related and that is why i liked it (dh proposed it).

meglet we had rules so no religious names and no foreign names (we are english). this included all french ones so farewell most names.

BigBadMousey · 27/06/2008 22:14

love it.

bluenosesaint · 27/06/2008 22:15

I love it! and love the nn Meri too

DRAGON30 · 27/06/2008 22:30

I always think of it as MerEdith too, and as a surname or boy's name, really. Its Welsh, and means 'leader', I believe. There is a lot of crossover of Christian/Surnames on this side of Offa's Dyke. All to do with the Patronymic naming system (look it up on Google!)

dragon that's too intelligent for me late on a friday night . I knew it had welsh roots though.

I have just texted DP (who is at the pub and therefore easily swayed) and informed him that DD will be Meredith because MN said so, and he's ok with it!

CilC · 28/06/2008 22:50

My Dh is a man and he likes it!

Fimbo · 28/06/2008 22:53

I quite like it. I also know a Marlowe.

janeite · 28/06/2008 23:02

It's lovely; I like Merry too.

findtheriver · 29/06/2008 10:53

Meredith sounds good, but bear in mind it's a surname too, and also a male first name!! (Also, whoever mentioned the pronunciation is correct - the stress is on the second syllable, not the first).
Don't like Merry. Sounds too Christmassy!!

DumbledoresGirl · 29/06/2008 10:56

I like it. I used to live next to someone (an old lady) called Meriel (pronounced Merry - Elle) which I thought was nice too.

throckenholt · 29/06/2008 11:00

I think it is really nice (but the shortened version and the long one).

pointydog · 29/06/2008 11:15

I find it too formal and stuffy
