Cora

What do you think of the name Cora? Does it remind you of the film ‘Coraline’? I find the film to be creepy and do not want that to be the main association when people hear the name.

We’re also considering Coral (which I feel has a very similar vibe and is possibly more original/less common than Cora), but I am worried that will be confused for Carol (as often happens with names that look alike). I know someone named Caroline who is often mistakenly called Carolyn, so the concern is not unfounded.

I love the name but for anyone following the Lindsey Clancy trial atm her little girl was called Cora I believe so to me just reminds me of that personaly

CeciliaMars · 19/08/2026 19:24

I like it.

Firsttimebabymummy · 19/08/2026 19:26

Really like Cora! I don't associate with anything personally.

Oneearringlost · 19/08/2026 19:26

I think Cora is lovely.

Specialneedsnightmare · 19/08/2026 19:27

I.prefer Cara.

Duckyfondant · 19/08/2026 19:27

Makes me think of an apple core. Agree Cara is much prettier

PancakeCloud · 19/08/2026 19:27

Like Cora. Think it’s having a bit of a moment.

Mulledjuice · 19/08/2026 19:28

Love it. Have loved it since I read Last of the Mohicans. I don't have any other associations. Never heard of "Coraline"

BeachHairForLife · 19/08/2026 19:29

Lovely name...only makes me think of the Downton Abbey Mum!

DramaAlpaca · 19/08/2026 19:30

It's nice. To me it has a lovely, elegant vintage feel. It's much nicer than Coral, which has a different vibe altogether.

Specialneedsnightmare · 19/08/2026 19:53

Coral is really unattractive imo. I've only met one and she was very elderly.

Peanutlicious · 19/08/2026 19:57

What about Coralie?

SunshineAndFizz · 19/08/2026 19:58

Love Cora.

And no doesn’t remind me of Coraline at all. Does make me think of Downton Abby (but that’s not a bad thing!)

Franxi · 19/08/2026 20:05

I know lots of little girls called Cora, it’s definitely having a resurgence, bit like Olivia did. I really like the name. I also like Coral too if you wanted something similar but less popular.

HugoThatway · 19/08/2026 21:08

Is your surname Knappell?

emuloc · 19/08/2026 21:12

Too harsh sounding for me personally, but as a pp pointed out, is a vintage sounding name. I would not associate it with anything, or anybody in particular.

HeddaGobbler · 19/08/2026 21:13

I love the name!

Letsskidaddle · 19/08/2026 21:14

Love it! Also found Coraline creepy (those button eyes!!) I pronounce ‘Coraline’ like ‘corra’ but to me, Cora is more of an ‘oar’ sound, so I don’t associate the two at all.

It’s a really lovely, timeless name.

Not so keen on Coral.

pongos · 19/08/2026 21:14

In my youth I knew lady called Cora. She told me that she got her name after their dog Cora. Her father was disappointed that she was a girl.

Boreded · 19/08/2026 21:15

I know someone with a baby Cora, I think it’s cute

mamaduckbone · 19/08/2026 21:31

I like it and wouldn’t think of Coraline at all. I taught a fabulous young lady called Cora a few years back so my association is a positive one (which can be a rarity as a teacher!😂)

Excellentsausages · 19/08/2026 21:44

It always reminds me of the character in the Agatha Christie story with the painting. But Agatha Christie did choose good names for her characters even if they come to sticky ends! I quite like it.

Giraffehaver · 19/08/2026 22:27

It reminds me of crows tbh. I find Cara softer and prettier

GlosGirl82 · 19/08/2026 22:28

Love it - friends of ours recently named their daughter this and it’s just perfect

Pistachiocake · 19/08/2026 22:36

Only time I've come across it is in Agatha Christie (and names from that time seem popular).
Don't think I've ever heard it anywhere else, never met one.
