This has been growing on me lately and I don't think it's too common nowadays - any thoughts?

Only problem is that our surname is George - is Jane George a bit of a mouthful?

and which spelling do you prefer?

Without Y definitely. But I know a nasty Jayne and lots of nice (middle name) Janes (including me )

PuppyMonkey · 27/06/2008 09:28

Don't really like it, sorry

ivykaty44 · 27/06/2008 09:31

Jane - the best

It is by far the most popular middle name but unusual as a first name after 1980.

JulesJules · 27/06/2008 09:32

Love Jane, pretty, classic, classy. I'm thinking Jane Austen, Jane Eyre...

Jayne - more of a dated mispelling, imo.

VictorianSqualor · 27/06/2008 09:36

I love the name Jane.
Without the Y.
I have mentioned it on many a name thread recently.
It's beautiful and understated. So much better than all the poncy made crap.

AbbeyA · 27/06/2008 16:52

I think that it will be lovely if it becomes popular again.

MrsMattie · 27/06/2008 16:52

Jane is 'meh'. Jayne is awful.

pointydog · 27/06/2008 16:53

I like Jane a lot.

But not keen on Jane George. juh juh juh

MrsMattie · 27/06/2008 16:55

I think it'll be a long while before Jane makes a comeback (which could be a plus, I suppose?). It's still associated with 'plain' for many people.

Comerscroft · 27/06/2008 18:24

Lovely name, very typical of my vintage.

Wouldn't go for a middle name beginning with J as you might get the shortening 'Jay-Jay'.

cyteen · 27/06/2008 18:33

Not a fan. It's the name equivalent of eating plain boiled pasta - does the job, but is completely blah.

SquiffyHock · 27/06/2008 18:36

Oooh Lapin! You have a real name!!!

Love Jane and it will be unusual for a little one now.

MyNameisJane · 27/06/2008 18:47

Remember to spell it the right way

JAN_E

There's no Y in it.

I've said it before - Girls named Jane really are the best!

msappropriate · 27/06/2008 18:47

I would personally be very excited at it making a comeback. Its funny how although baby names are so fashion-led people can't see it and forget how everyone changes their mind every 30 or so years. I have a name book which charts the most popular names over 100 years. The 1900 list is so similar to the 2000 one but the 1950s and 1970s ones were very dfferent.

msappropriate · 27/06/2008 18:49

yes definitelty no y. It annoys me that people spell it first that way when there must be far more women named Jane not Jayne. My very snobby mum thought Jayne was the common spelling.

ivykaty44 · 27/06/2008 18:50

Ernest - 1901 fav name for a boy - what is the fav name for a girl?

msappropriate · 27/06/2008 20:06

aah in my book it was names like James Edward, William, Alfred (Alfie in 2000) and Alice, Charlotte, Emily, Sophie, Ellen, etc. I gave book away recently so can't check.

CilC · 28/06/2008 04:28

Definitely Jane. Went to school with a Jane Jones and while I am not sure I would have given my DD that combination, Jane was lovely!

LadyThompson · 30/06/2008 11:06

Jane is lovely, and underused as a first name nowadays. Jayne isn't nice. I can say this as it is one of my middle names. My father said it was in honour of Jayne Mansfield, but I think it's rather common and so does my Mum!

MaryAnnSingleton · 30/06/2008 11:07

please.please don't put a Y in Jane

crumpet · 30/06/2008 11:11

A long middle name would be pretty - eg Jane Elizabeth George

MaryAnnSingleton · 30/06/2008 11:11

janie jones - great song
