Is Eliahna trendy and overused?

Thoughts on the name Eliahna for a little girl? The shortening (Ellie) is somewhat basic and overused, but it wouldn't bother me that much because DH and I wouldn't have to call her Ellie. I'm just wondering if the full name (including every spelling variant) has also been overused. I know that it seems to have become very popular and trendy in the 2010s. Is it still?

It's pronounced the same as Eliana.

I’m confused. Why would you want a name which is a totally new spelling? As someone with a made up name, I promise you, she won’t thank you for it.

My colleague has a newborn Eliana. Before that I haven’t heard of it. It’s a lovely less heard of take on Ellie/Ella type names. No need for the random H though, it’s just weird and unnecessary.

DH thought this spelling (with the h) would make it more clear that it's not pronounced with the same sound of the name Anne. People often confuse the pronunciations of Ana and Anna.

We have an Eliana in the family, usually shortened to Ellie or Ells.

Next to nobody is going to make that association. I wouldn’t worry.

Ive never heard of the name, but think it’s quite pretty, but definitely lose the H. It makes it uglier somehow and more pretentious.

Oh, ok I get it. I know a few Elianas and it wouldn’t occur to me that it would be Ellie-Anna so I think youll be ok.

I have a 5 year old Eliana. I like Hebrew “Eli” names because I like the meanings; Eliana, Elisheva, Elisha, Eliora, Elisa. She’s is Eliana to most people bar childminder and one of my neighbours that call her Eli. DH vetoed Elisheva and Elisha. If you like Eliahna use it but be ready to hear “I can’t pronounce that” instead of them attempting to.

Nice name but spelling makes me think she must have a fishy looking big brother called piranha.

i Know 1 Elliana who is now 17.

Never seen it with an h either.

Why would your DH 'create a new spelling'? There's a reason it's not spelt with an H!

Like so many others, it isn't a name I've ever heard of, so was doubting it could be overused.

Then someone has kindly linked to a list of names. If 'over used' is your concern, that seems to have cleared that up then.

I 100% agree with pp who said please don't change the spelling of a known name though - it will be SUCH a pain for your dd for the rest of her life.

One N already gives the rule that it's 'ahna' not 'anna' so adding the H is not needed and won't achieve what you want. People who are going to pronounce it wrong will do so regardless.

And before anyone says I know Ana is a name but it's not the UK English spelling and doesn't naturally create the same sound as Anna.

Without the "h" it's a pretty name and obvious how it should be pronounced. With the "h" it gets confusing somehow.

It’s an ugly spelling, I’d do a double take if I saw it written down. I’m sure that of all the names available you could find something much nicer.

She will be forever spelling it and correcting people. DS has an Irish name which he likes, but in Starbucks or wherever he just says his name is Fred.

Unfortunately, this tragedy was also my first thought when I read the thread title, and I live in Wales. We're inundated with American news.

Agree spelling terrible, doesn't really give a clue to the pronunciation either. I read it as ee-lie rather than el-ee, like the name Eli rather than Ellie. And also, even if you don't like Ellie, it's likely she will be called Ellie by everyone else, or at least El. And will quite likely then ask you to call her that too as she grows up. So if you don't want an Ellie, it's probably not a great choice. How about Liana instead? It's probably less likely to be shortened as it's a less cumbersome name than Eliana, though you might end up with a Lee or a Lana.

Overused? I’ve never even heard of it.

The spelling is silly. Don’t inflict a name no one will be able to spell on a child. The H in there is just pointless. And it will get shortened to Ellie. And every other young woman is called Ellie. (OK it feels like that to me as my sons know so many)

It’s just a sort of feminine noise to me. Like serelina or ariania or tiritania or everianialina or Mirilianiarina. Same sort of syllables. Just another Ellie but over complicated. Do drop the H though if you love it.

I’ll explain. PP meant it sounds like someone has sat down and come up with a series of letters to make a name.
