Boys' names used 10 times or fewer in 2025 (England & Wales)

The ONS stats for baby names in 2025 came out yesterday, so I've been having a dig through the data set.

Parents-to-be are often looking for lesser used names, so here's a small selection of boy names that were used 10 times or fewer for babies born in 2025.

Some are names which were never commonly used. Some are names which have fallen out of favour with today's parents. And some are definitely more usable than others!

I've not tallied up combined spellings, so some of the names listed might tip over 10 if all the different variants are taken into consideration.

Gordon & Keith, amazing they are so low!

DrRylandGrace · 11/07/2026 14:31

They don’t show any that are under two instances, so these will all be 3-9 babies given that name.

Is it? I don’t find that at all surprising.

Lindy2 · 11/07/2026 14:33

Well I can see why lots of them are infrequently used. I don't think we'll ever see a lot of baby Wilberts. 😂

Gary, Graham, Gordon and Keith and some others are just awaiting their turn again.

Agree. That's why I was surprised so low.

Popular names of people aged 60-80 always seem to be out of fashion. I think of eg Alfie and Ivy as old but they have come around.

Gordon, Keith etc will come back in 20 years so are a good bet for a rarer name now that will make the future adult appear younger.

MinPinSins · 11/07/2026 21:11

finnick - for when you just know your baby is going to be difficult.

user1492757084 · 12/07/2026 07:07

I notice the list of girls names used rarely is shorter.

With this boys list I dislike a higher proportion and only regard about a quarter of the names handsome enough to use.

Gateappreciation · 12/07/2026 07:32

Jacoby :- what a great name.

i’m surprised by Phineas, unless there’s other versions..

Never met a baby Harbour before.

TBH I didn't intend for the boys' list to be this long. I just had more time to pare down the girls' list. It could have been a lot longer!

ETA - I think people generally tend to be more conservative with boys' names, so unusual names probably stand out more and/or seem less appealing.

I'm quite surprised Bartholomew is on there - I would have thought it was more popular. Or do people avoid it because of Bart Simpson?

patooties · 12/07/2026 10:16

I was surprised at some of the names on those lists. they don’t seem incredibly rare?

I’m not entirely convinced Keith or Gary will come back into fashion.

Nothing to add OP but kudos for the correct use of 'fewer' Grin

Me neither. I'd rather have Wilbert than Gary tbh.
