Girls' names used 10 times or fewer in 2025 (England & Wales)

TheDonsDingleberries · 10/07/2026 22:54

The ONS stats for baby names in 2025 came out yesterday, so I've been having a dig through the data set.

Parents-to-be are often looking for lesser used names, so here's a small selection of girl names that were used 10 times or fewer for babies born in 2025, according to the latest data set.

Some are names which were never commonly used. Some are names which have fallen out of favour with today's parents. And some are definitely more usable than others!

I've not tallied up combined spellings, so some of the names listed might tip over 10 if all the different variants are taken into consideration.

Surprised that Sian is on this list!

Hpsa · 11/07/2026 00:42

Some lovely names on there! And I know several youngsters with names on that list.

Calliopespa · 11/07/2026 00:50

How about Richenda?

Enko · 11/07/2026 00:53

Christabel surprised me its fairly often mentioned on here as a suggestion.

In a way Edna, Maud and Gladys too with the trend for old names it surprises me they have not revived.

Melia is in the top 100 in Denmark. 2 of my old school friends have granddaughters named Melia.

Dd2s name is not on the list at all this year she is usually in the 1500s.

Teado · 11/07/2026 00:55

Surprised that Jodie and Gemma/Jemma are on there. I know most Jodies and Gemmas are aged 20+ but didn’t think the names had fallen out of favour to that extent.

Id have thought that Susanna and Sian would’ve been a bit more popular too

I have a Lorna :)

sesquipedalian · 11/07/2026 05:57

There are names that were common when I was young - Annette, Dawn, Diane.

Jodie surprised me as well, considering how popular Josie is. It's interesting how one letter can make such a big difference.

Gemma/Jemma was less surprising to me as it was really popular when I was growing up, so probably considered a 'mum name' now and not yet due a revival.

I thought Susanna would be higher too, but maybe all the different spellings variations split the vote? It's a nice name with lots of nicknames available, so I can see it coming back.

I've not met many Sians in real life, although now know a primary school aged one.

Twyla just makes me think of Hogfather, where the children are Gawain and Twyla and much fun is made of the fact.

I have a soft spot for Edna and Maud!

That's interesting about Melia being popular in Denmark. Perhaps it will make its way across in future?

Really surprised at Dawn being on the list both nature and 'time' (seasons, days of the week, months) seem pretty popular so I'm surprised it hasn't been caught in either trend.

Lots of 40s borns Aunts and Mum friends name there and quite a few of my 70s born school friends.

user1492757084 · 11/07/2026 08:05

Thank you.

I'm loving most of those names.
Great to see variety and to be reminded of some beautiful names.

Helenbelena · 11/07/2026 10:48

Such beautiful names! Much more interesting and memorable than the overused top 100 names (Olivia, Sophie, Evie etc)!!

Squirrelsnut · 11/07/2026 10:50

My name is there! I never see it anywhere! 😀

Surprised that Sian is on this list!

I wonder if the spelling with the circumflex over the a is more popular now?

Lindy2 · 11/07/2026 14:40

There's actually some lovely names on there that may well become popular again in time.

I don't think the data shows diacritical marks, so that was the only spelling of Siân there was.

Fair enough, thank you. I know lots who must be hitting their late twenties / early thirties, as well as older, so I suppose it has hit the "mum" stage!

Echobelly · 11/07/2026 14:58

I know a Keturah who is about 8 - it's a lovely name (Hebrew meaning 'spices' I think)
Adrienne is nice, I've long thought it should be revived.

I think Yvonne is overdue a revival and probably will get one as people get back round to 'great grandparent' names (like the Alfies and Esmes etc we have now)
