How popular is Emma for baby girls at the moment?

Due a baby girl this December and I think we’re leaning towards Emma. DH and I don’t agree on many names (only Emma, Eve and Isla) and I think Emma is probably going to be the winner because I suspect it’s less popular than the other two (when you account for all the Evie’s). It also fits best with our boys (Alexander and James).

I wanted to check Emma’s popularity by asking you how many young/baby Emma’s you know? I don’t mind there being a few but I’m keen to avoid baby girl being one of many in every class at school.

Thanks :)

I don't know any! It's definitely the safest choice out of the 3 if you're worried about popularity.

I don’t know any baby/child Emma’s, but quite a few Emily’s.

I know one in the Oxford area. She's about eighteen months old.

Such a nice name!

I teach 200 children each week but know 100s more. I know of 1 emma who is 3.5yrs old and another 2 around 12 years old. Its a good solid name and not overly popular. Strangely I currently teach a number of Sarah's

I don’t think you can go wrong with the name. It’s lovely. It goes with your son’s names nicely too.

So was mine ☺️

By any chance because you were obsessed with “friends” at the time? Or just me?

Yep, you guessed right 😂

Brilliant. And also loling at your username as I’m sure that was the mamas and papas baby range we had for our Emma too 🤣☺️

Dd was only Emma in primary apart from a teacher. Now secondary and theres an Emma in the year above. (And two teachers.)

Loads of the other names on your list at both schools though.

I like the meaning of the name.

Yes, Emma’s nursery and toys and clothes were all Humphrey’s Corner from Mothercare.

Do not know any small Emmas but she will l LOVE to watch and dance with Emma Memma when young and Emma (film 2020) when she is sixteen.

My just turned 12 year old loves the film. Shes a huge jane austen fan though.

The song Emma by Matmatah is also on her Spotify as she's learning French. And self defence, so a song about Emma Peel from the Avengers is pretty cool.

pamelabrown · 10/07/2026 19:22

I don’t know of any Emma’s in any classes and my son is now moving into year 4 so u should be safe if say. It’s a lovely name

pamelabrown · 10/07/2026 19:23

Isla is VERY popular and there’s 2 in my sons class so if u didn’t want popular then avoid Isla

elliesmummy19 · 10/07/2026 19:24

Emma was one of my favourite names when we named our daughter (born in 2019) but my husband wasn’t a fan. I love it!

thornbury · 10/07/2026 19:26

I know one who would be about 8 now, and I had two in my year 2 class I taught in 2003-4. None since then!
