How popular is Emma for baby girls at the moment?

Due a baby girl this December and I think we’re leaning towards Emma. DH and I don’t agree on many names (only Emma, Eve and Isla) and I think Emma is probably going to be the winner because I suspect it’s less popular than the other two (when you account for all the Evie’s). It also fits best with our boys (Alexander and James).

I wanted to check Emma’s popularity by asking you how many young/baby Emma’s you know? I don’t mind there being a few but I’m keen to avoid baby girl being one of many in every class at school.

Thanks :)

I know one aged 4. It’s a nice name.

JSMill · 09/07/2026 21:13

I work in a school. I haven’t known an Emma in years. I think it’s a very safe choice.

CeciliaMars · 09/07/2026 21:14

i know a few but it’s not overdone - do it!

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 09/07/2026 21:14

I have a 4 month old and I take her to quite a few baby groups. I haven’t come across any baby Emmas.

RelievedNoYouTubeMum · 09/07/2026 21:25

Midwife here and I have not come across an Emma in the past 5 years. I myself am an Emma and it’s a classic and safe name that doesn’t age.

GuavaBanana · 09/07/2026 21:31

Emma is lovely. I know one under 5 across our nursery, playgroups and toddler classes.

But (particularly if you may shorten to Em or Emmy) I have also encountered countless Emily's, two Emilias, an Emmie and an Emmeline.

Well the baby name data was released today so you can know for sure! Its the 85th most popular girl name, 536 babies named it last year. Probably not likely to get multiples in a group or class. Lovely name.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 09/07/2026 21:37

I only know older Emmas
I think it’s a lovely name.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 09/07/2026 21:40

Currently the most popular name in Denmark for newborn girls.

Giraffehaver · 09/07/2026 22:08

Love it

DesLynamsMoustache · 09/07/2026 22:11

Classic name so always in style but never too popular. I have one and she’s generally the only one in her class, activity group, etc. It’s such a lovely name.

HumphreysCorner · 09/07/2026 22:27

Aw, my Emma was born in 2003 so happy the name is back again x

stardust1994 · 09/07/2026 22:32

Thanks everybody! I was a bit unsure at first because I’m early 30s so went to school with quite a few Emma’s (all lovely girls). My own name was also very popular in the 90s. However, I do love it and the fact it’s classic.

Very very popular, has been steadily top 3 for several few years now in America. In the UK it’s unheard of in my 9YOs cohort but pops up occasionally with girls the same age as my 5YO. Also don’t discount the number of mums that will be called Emma due to how popular it was in the late 1980s to mid 1990s.

stardust1994 · 09/07/2026 22:45

Haha yeah I’m definitely expecting there to be a lot of mum Emma’s but to be honest that doesn’t really bother me. It’s more that I don’t want her to be at school with 3 others in her class.

I know a few in my age group and im 45. I don't know or have heard of babies/children. Its definitely a come back name x

Icecreamisthebest · 09/07/2026 22:50

I think naming conventions have actually changed a lot over the past 10-15 years and there are now a lot more options so there is far less chance of kids having multiple kids with the same name in the same class. For my kids, there were occasionally 2 kids with the same name in the same year but that was about it. As long as it's not a top 5-10 name you should be fine.

it's also a gorgeous name

So was mine ☺️

By any chance because you were obsessed with “friends” at the time? Or just me?

mellongoose · 10/07/2026 05:44

I love Emma in the same way as Anna or Laura. Classic.

ghostyslovesheets · 10/07/2026 05:50

My Emma is 21 now! She was the only Emma at school and in her friend group. I love the name

ButtercupYellow26 · 10/07/2026 05:56

Emma is beautiful. A timeless classic.
I know two, both in their 30s.

dozer222 · 10/07/2026 06:02

I have a 5 and 10 year old and haven’t come across a single child Emma in all my time as a parent. I like it. Also like Emmie as a nickname. I wouldn’t go for either of the others, massively over used and it does affect how you feel about the name over time, I find.

user1492757084 · 10/07/2026 08:24

Do not know any small Emmas but she will l LOVE to watch and dance with Emma Memma when young and Emma (film 2020) when she is sixteen.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 10/07/2026 08:32

I haven’t noticed Emma’s for ages. It’s a lovely classic name.

Nursemumma92 · 10/07/2026 09:30

I know one child called Emma aged 8.
