Elliot/Elliott for a boy. Will it get shorted to Ellie ? And which spelling?

I know a grown up Elliott. I've never heard anyone shorten his name.

It's a really good name for a baby, child, teenager and grown up. It's well known but not common, no problems with pronunciation and the spelling is straightforward (just need to specify whether it's one or two t's).

It's an excellent choice in my view

Congratulations!

SisterMaryImmaculate · 17/06/2026 13:08

Great name. Taught a few- never heard it shortened to Ellie. All really good lads too.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 17/06/2026 13:10

I don’t think it would get shortened to Ellie.

I agree with PP, I think it’s a good name for the reasons they’ve said.
I think it’s unusual to have a 3 syllable name that doesn’t really have a shorter version for a nickname. Not that’s that a bad thing. Just worth considering if you wanted to have a name you could shorten.

alexdgr8 · 17/06/2026 13:11

It's OK but I don't generally like surnames used as a given name
Unless there is a good reason eg to preserve mother's family name down the line

Keroppi · 17/06/2026 13:19

My friends dc is called Elliot - he was affectionately called Ellie by his parents when he was toddler/preschooler age but full name only from then on. Think he did El briefly to his mates in teenagehood

Feelthebreezeofthehebrides · 17/06/2026 13:30

Thanks all. I think I will put it on my list .

I don't like it (too surname-y), but I know a couple, now in their teens, and have never heard them being called anything other than Eliott or Ell.

StationJack · 17/06/2026 13:38

He might be Ell or Ells. I know 3 and they don't, to my knowledge, get it shortened. There are 3 spellings. Elliott, Elliot and Eliot.

Feelthebreezeofthehebrides · 17/06/2026 14:13

Now my husband is saying that going with our surname it could sound like an Estate Agent’s firm. ☹️. Just as some of you have been saying .. it’s a surname . I still like it though

StationJack · 17/06/2026 14:21

I never thought that about the ones I know and I know 2 families with the surname Elliot.

Floppyearedlab · 17/06/2026 14:23

It’s not my favourite but I can’t imagine it would become Ellie.
Unlike Eleanor for a girl which is beautiful until it is…

Twoshoesnewshoes · 17/06/2026 14:26

I really like it, one t is my preference.
i know two (young adults), they both get called ‘El’ for short.

StationJack · 17/06/2026 14:46

I can’t imagine it would become Ellie. You can't tell until you use the name. Kids can be creative with nicknames.

FrenchBunionSoup · 17/06/2026 14:50

I like it but didn't pick it as I was worried he might get called Smelliot.

Also, it reminds me of Elliott Smith whose music was beautiful but died quite tragically by suicide (the details of which I found disturbing) so that put me off. If you don't know who he is though then don't let that affect your choice.

Lindy2 · 17/06/2026 14:55

I really like Elliott. I prefer the 2 ts. It seems more balanced spelt that way.

It's an established first name as well as a surname so I don't really get the Estate Agent thing. Lots of names are first names and surnames. Andrew, Donald, Samuel, Denis, Edward, Fraser etc.

Echobelly · 17/06/2026 15:00

I like it, all the Elliotts I've ever met have been sound blokes!

StationJack · 17/06/2026 17:50

Are Andrew, Denis, Donald, and Edward surnames?
Andrews, McDonald/Donaldson, Dennis and Edwards are.

@StationJack I know people with the surname Andrew and Donald. I guess there are many surnames used as first names…Elliot being one.

@Feelthebreezeofthehebrides , OK. They would be quite unusual but I l know people with surnames like James, Joseph, John and David,

itsgettingweird · 17/06/2026 18:15

Love Elliot.

dont Think it’ll be shortened Ellie.

Eli maybe but none of the ones I’ve known have ever been shortened.

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 17/06/2026 18:19

It’s my favour boys name! Elliott.. has to be spelt like this for me. Would have used it definitely but I have 2 girls.

BoleynMemories13 · 17/06/2026 18:47

I like Elliot (one t, Elliott looks too much like a surname).

I've never known one be called Ellie. 'El' maybe, but not Ellie.

OchreSnake · 17/06/2026 18:53

Mine is one L one T, and he does get called El!
