Is Emily Rose too dated, or still a timeless baby name?

I like classic no nonsense sounding names and think Emily rose is very pretty although im very aware Emily is dropping in popularity from its peak in 90s-00s it ranks 34 so not unheard of but i doubt ill meet many babies with it these days.

I’d be open to other suggestions for middle names but I’m def picking Emily. I know rose seems to get eye rolls on here as middle because it’s very overused but it seems to flow great with any name. My ds told me that her daughter who’s 22 went to school with a lot of Emily roses and says its a very 2000s cutesy type combo and sounds abit dated now and overdone similar to how Olivia rose, Ava rose etc is now. It does sound like a type of combo that got popular very quick while Emily itself was peaking even tho rose is very classic of course i can tell most Emily Roses are born in early 2000s. Should I avoid this combo if i want a timless name? or choose different middle name that sounds less cutesy and more formal like Catherine, Elizabeth etc something slightly more dignified?

any suggestions would be appreciated

I like Emily with something classic and traditional, for example:

Emily Alice
Emily Beatrice
Emily Catherine
Emily Florence
Emily Iris
Emily Matilda
Emily Margaret
Emily Susannah
Emily Violet
Emily Josephine
Emily Victoria

Emily Clare

Emily always sounds a bit prissy / frilly, to me. Makes me think of a rag doll.

Clare Emily is even better!

DryTerryandJUNE · 04/06/2026 23:40

No one uses middle names so they don't matter in the slightest. It could be Boudicca or Cleopatra, it doesn't need to trip off the tongue because it will so rarely be said out loud. Unless you want to do the naff American double name nonsense e.g. Sarah Jessica Parker..?

LizzieSiddal · 04/06/2026 23:50

Emily Rose is a beautiful, timeless name.

Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks, if you love it, use it.

Isn’t Emily rose classic and traditional ?

It’s lovely but I personally would try to be a bit more original.

Emily Rosalind perhaps?

sparklyblueberry2 · 05/06/2026 02:40

Each name on their own are lovely, together they become plain and common. I know of four girls called Emily Rose of various ages. It’s far too associated with the horror film.
I also know of an Erin Rose, an Ella Rose and an Eadie Rose. There are so many other beautiful names to choose from. One day it might just come to you if you try not to be so set on Rose.

why are you set on Rose for a middle name?

wandawaves · 05/06/2026 03:13

Well I think it's timeless 🙄 but my DD with the middle name Rose said it's "basic", and wishes she had something cooler.

I had a sweet old aunt called Emily Celia.

I always liked it.
Her sisters also had lovely names.
Emily is of the 1890 - 1900 era.

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · 05/06/2026 05:08

Emily - beautiful.

Emily Rose - 😵‍💫😬

ThatCosy · 05/06/2026 06:10

Too pretty-pretty for me and I hope that flower names and ultra-femininity are finally going away because, you are right, they seem to have been around for decades now.

Classic sounds better to me. But my view is that a strong woman needs a strong name.

LBFseBrom · 05/06/2026 06:12

Lovely, my ex neighbour's granddaughter is called Emily Rose and it suits her so well.

PolkaDotPorridge · 05/06/2026 06:13

First thing I thought of is a horror movie!

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 05/06/2026 09:30

I like it. I had a relative (who I never knew) called Emily Rose who was born in the 1890s, so using Rose as a middle name is not just a modern fad, and it's a pretty name in itself so I say why not use it? My own middle name was a very common one in the 60s, when I was given it, but I don't see that as a reason to dislike it. If anything it can give a nice little sense of belonging when you find out someone has the same middle name as you.

FWIW, the Emily Rose in my ancestry has a sister called Mary Ann, and that feels a lot more dated, and fixed as a common combination, to me. If there's a cliché middle name for Emily it's probably Jane.

ThisLoudPanda · 05/06/2026 09:31

Are you planning to call her "Emily" or "Emily Rose"?

I think Emily is a lovely, classic name. To me it's firmly in the category of timeless names that are unlikely to drive strong opinion for or against (I say that at someone who chose a boy's name in that category for my son).

"Emily Rose" however is a bit twee, if you're planning to use both names as her name. I think two-name names in general have been a bit overplayed on recent years - most famous example being "Molly Mae" (I would put "Emily Rose" in the same category).

As an aside, don't most people choose a middle name to honour a family member? I didn't give much thought as to whether my sons first and middle name "went" together - just made sure his initials didn't spell out something rude!

hugasaurus · 05/06/2026 09:37

My first thought was the horror film too I’m afraid! Will you call her Emily Rose or is Rose just a middle name? If the latter then I don’t think it matters, no one will use it anyway. If the former, I don’t like those kind of double names anyway. I think they are unwieldy and annoying to go through life with.

My DDs’ middle names are family names, for my mum and DH’s mum, who have both died. They won’t ever really be used but I like knowing that they’re there.

NamingNoNames · 05/06/2026 10:03

@Bluewales Isn’t Emily rose classic and traditional ? In the same way as Sarah Jane is and it would be like being a Sarah Jane born in the early 1990s. The name had been overused two decades earlier.

Unless you want to do the naff American double name nonsense e.g. Sarah Jessica Parker. Apparently she is called 'Sarah Jessica' not Sarah. There might be a reason e.g. named after both grandmothers. Your description is a bit too harsh.

EmilyRose1970s · 05/06/2026 10:21

Well I would say it's timeless as I was born in the 70s 🤣 and there are Emily Rose's from all decades. I don't particularly like my name though, especially Rose, as it's very girly...and I'm definitely not!

clickypen · 05/06/2026 10:23

I think it is lovely and classic.

EnidVance · 05/06/2026 12:39

It’s just boring.

Every girl is a ‘something’ Rose.

Bellybellas · 05/06/2026 15:11

Emily Rose is the equivalent of Sarah Louise of the 70s. Incredibly dull and overused.

bridgetreilly · 05/06/2026 23:52

Boring.

Emily Joy
Emily Hope
Emily Fiona
Emily June
Emily Beth

OtterandaRock · 06/06/2026 00:06

Emily Adrienne
Emily Edith
Emily Judith
Emily Marian
Emily Morgan
Emily Ruth

I like Emily Ruth

MeadowMouse · 06/06/2026 00:35

I am an Emily Rose and find this thread hilarious.

I was born in the 80s. I've always liked my name except that so many girls were named Emily around that time. I've never met another Emily Rose. I had a great aunt called Emily.

I'm now trying to name my own daughter, and think Rose is simply too common as a middle name - but for good reason. It's short and pretty and combines nicely with many names.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 06/06/2026 08:17

It’s a lovely name.
What matters is that you like it and it isn’t a silly name which will ever cause your daughter grief.
