Anyone else dislike traditionally boys' names being used for girls?

Does anyone else hate the trend of giving girls traditionally boy names (Elliott, Ezra, James, Scottie, Tommy, etc.)? Currently pregnant and had a family member suggest one of these types of names for our daughter and almost rolled my eyes when she said it. I don't understand why it's so popular at the moment and why so many parents seemingly want their daughters to be seen as masculine. Maybe it bothers me because you never see it go the other way round. You never see feminine names become unisex. It does seem to be more popular in America (thankfully), but I can see it increasing in popularity here.

The Elliotts I know are all male. I know a few.

Yes, giving a girl a more masculine name does suggest the person wanted a boy. Like the mums who have boys with long hair, it suggests (IMO) that they wanted a girl...

I know a mum who had a boy and gave him a "unisex" name but then decided when he was 6 that he was actually a girl....

I knew a woman through work called Rodney. Apparently it was given to the first born in her family, regardless of sex.

Specialneedsnightmare · 22/05/2026 21:01

Totally agree. It just looks as though the parents were desperate for a boy.

PurBal · 22/05/2026 21:05

It’s been happening for years though. Eg Evelyn.

WhereAreWeNow · 22/05/2026 21:11

I like some of the shortened names for girls (Frankie, Jamie) but not Gavin or Tommy! Tbh, I haven't heard of girls called any of the names to OP mentioned.

What about the ‘trend’ of naming daughters after fathers - Dolina, Georgina, Alberta etc. This isn’t exactly new!

I have never known anyone call a girl Ezra, Elliott, James, Scottie, or Tommy!

I met a female Elliot the other day, and I knew a James years ago.
I have an irrational loathing of the name Elliot, so a female Elliot seemed even worse. I don’t like this trend either, agree it sounds as though the parents think girls aren’t as strong or dynamic as boys.

That's not the same as giving a girl a boy's name.

I’m a big fan. Kylie Kelce’s girls are Finley, Bennett, Elliott and Wyatt and I love them. I also think Elijah and Scottie are better suited as girls names (although I don’t think I’ve ever met a male Scottie, just Scott so I’m not sure I’ve ever seen Scottie as a male name). But a lot of the girls names I like have sort of masculine vibes too I think (Bronwyn, Seren, etc).

It doesn’t work the other way for me as I’d never name a boy Rosie, but I’d never name a girl Rosie either… I would consider Seren or Bronwyn for a boy though.

But I’ve said on here before, I remember being 15 and so jealous of a girl whose middle name was Peter as I thought it was the coolest thing ever.

GiddyLeader · 22/05/2026 21:33

Shirley, Stacy, Hilary and Jocelyn all used to be male names but now sound like female names.

Cobrakainerd · 22/05/2026 21:35

Reminds me of 'A boy named Sue'. Or a Blytonesque style Georgina(George) and Henrietta (Henry) in one of the books..

Exactly this.

Also, I have never heard of the name Dolina. And I don't know what the 'male' version is.

TeenLifeMum · 22/05/2026 21:37

I love Elliott for a girl. Just as well we don’t all like the same thing or everyone would be called the same name.

suburburban · 22/05/2026 21:37

Yes not keen

remember the actress in Waltons - Michael learned - why?

Tyler is another one

garlictwist · 22/05/2026 21:37

I’m reading a novel at the moment written in the 1950s in which one of the male characters is named Lindsay.

Gosmacked by most of this to be honest.

Lindsay is a scottish men's name.

My gp’s name (as in doctor) is Lindsay and there was a famous cricketer called Lindsay.

I’d make a guess you’re not in the USA.

MrsFionaCharming · 22/05/2026 21:43

Especially when it’s a thread asking for ‘strong’ girls names and people are suggesting boys names! As though being feminine makes you weak.

NamingNoNames · 22/05/2026 21:46

@WheretheFishesareFrightening , Bronwyn is awful - it's a misspelt Welsh girl's name. It's also a misspelt feminine noun.
Seren is a noun name and the noun is feminine.

modgepodge · 22/05/2026 21:47

Also dislike it. I don’t mind when people use harry, oli, George etc as shortened versions of Harriet, Olivia, Georgina etc for some reason!
