Cassidy & Adelaide Siblings names

Expecting our second daughter, do you feel the name Adelaide is nice & goes well with her sibling Cassidy?

I’m concerned it’s a little too ‘out there’, but do love it & struggling with any alternatives.

thanks!

It’s not ‘out there” at all, it’s very traditional! I mean, why do you think the city of Adelaide is named that? (Adelaide of Saxe-Meinigen,wife of William IV).

ETA to say I think it’s a nice name.

What would it be shortened to? Laid? Not great for a girl!

Ada, surely?

Or not shortened. There's a novel idea!

Op I feel like it's less out there than Cassidy 🤣 but they work well

Cassidy is a surname.

Cassidy is a surname.

But the OP appears to have already used it for an existing child.

muddyford · 14/05/2026 09:46

Adelaide is nice but Cassidy not so much. David, Butch etc.

Peaches1906 · 14/05/2026 10:10

Yes our 2 year old is called Cassidy, and we shorten it to Cassie. I don’t think Butch Cassidy will be a problem for a child of this generation, I didn’t even know who they were until looking in to the name.

Adelaide we were thinking could be shortened to Ada, Della or Addie

A nice traditional name.

hairstreak · 14/05/2026 10:46

Adelaide is lovely, and shortens well to Addie. Ada doesn't make sense as a shortening to me, as the initial "A" sounds are different.

Chamallo · 14/05/2026 11:44

I like them together, and probably similar level of popularity at the moment? Cassidy sounds more modern and American, and Adelaide more traditional and European, but I don’t think it really matters.

AuContrairePubicHair · 14/05/2026 11:49

It's fine.

Addie is the obvious short form and goes really nicely with Cassie (which I love 😍).

Zimunya · 14/05/2026 11:49

Cassidy is a beautiful name. I can't make any useful comment on Adelaide as I always think of it as being a city in Australia, not a person.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 14/05/2026 12:11

I love Adelaide. You can use Ada, Adela, Adele, Aidy, Lady, Della or Heidi as potential nicknames

SquigglePigs · 14/05/2026 12:14

Adelaide is nice, and Addie is lovely. I think it goes well with Cassidy (and I love Cassie).

Addison would go well too and give similar nicknames.

Jo1667 · 14/05/2026 12:39

Adelaide is lovely, and was the name of my great grandma. It was shortened to Adele back then, Addie is lovely

Horselover90 · 14/05/2026 12:39

Sounds very American

It actually sounds French to me, and I like the French pronounciation:

Add-i-lay- EEED.

MiaKulper · 14/05/2026 13:14

Addy. I'm not keen but it's not awful.

It's German in origin. Variant form of Adelheid (which was Heidi's real name in the Johanna Spyri novel -- nasty Fraulein Rottenmeier always calls her that).

The French version is Adéläide, pronounced more 'A-dell-i-EED, roughly, @Calliopespa. (Which I think is a bit mouthfully for an English speaker...?)

Yes, I like the Adelheid too, but Adelaide is the French version, and I'm not sure of your pronunciation ( it was my French Great Aunt's name) but it can be hard to tell with "MN phonics" (which mine were too!)

GingerBeverage · 14/05/2026 13:23

It’s nice, quite formal. I do prefer Adeline, as I think Lena is pretty.

It's my (Parisian) best friend's mum's name -- she's originally from Alsace (and is vocal about having always hated her name!).

Cassidy and Adelaide are fine.

I prefer the full name Adele. It's fresh and less fussy.

Peanutlicious · 14/05/2026 16:52

I think they are both lovely names

RegalDiamondMonster · 14/05/2026 17:22

I like Adelaide a lot. The only one I've met went by Addie.
