Inspired by the thread asking if people don't like their names. As someone trying to choose a name for our upcoming baby, it would be so useful to know what type of names people tend to like throughout life and which they hate and why etc. I was surprised on the other thread that so many people disliked having a popular name!

I realise this is very outing if your name is very unusual so you may not want to say it. I've obviously name changed. I'll go first!

Nicola (nickname Nicky) I'm a mid 80s baby so Nicola was still popular amongst my peers but not overly so. It was even more popular in the 70s. There was a couple of others in my year at school. I didn't hate my name but I would have preferred a more girly name when I was younger. I didn't like that Nicola is a boys name in other parts of Europe.
The vast majority of Nicolas are my age or older which is slightly ageing, so I'm wary of that when choosing my own kids names. I MUCH prefer Nicky and I'm glad I have a nickname option.
Overall I'm fine with it and can't imagine changing it but I'd probably choose something different for myself.

I am a 70's child and called Sara (not pronounced the Sarah way).
My dad wanted to call me Sarah, but my mum hated it, so they dropped the h and it changes the sound completely.

I love it as it is different, but I do get called Sarah and don't like that.
I also get called Zara sometimes and like that too.

I’m Heather, born mid-80s. I dislike my name so much that I went by a completely different one through university. Most Heathers are older than me; in my head, Heather is an overweight 50-something from the American Midwest.

I suppose objectively it’s ‘pretty’ as it’s a flower name, but I think there’s a reason it didn’t surge in popularity when names like Daisy and Poppy became fashionable 20 odd years ago.

I think Heather is lovely. I see it as quite a soft, romantic name and if I'd ever had twins I quite liked Heather and Hazel 😊

Yep same here, I’m also a Joanne, i had 3 others in my year at school, also think it’s quite a boring name and would have preferred Joanna.

I'm a Joanna, and the number of times I get called Joanne, you wouldn't believe. People just can't seem to get in into their heads that there is an A at the end of my name. I went by Jo for a long time to avoid the confusion, but much prefer Joanna now. As long as people get it right!!

SunnyWarrington · 07/05/2026 13:11

@Boudica70
The men in my family have Valentine, but it’s given as the male version of Valentina, which comes from my Great Grandmother, who was born on Feb 14th

inkblink · 07/05/2026 13:28

I'm Charlotte, born in the 70s, and was the only one at my school. I've always liked it, never shortened it.

I met two four year olds today called Sarah and Clare - I think 70s and 80s names are due for a comeback

I hate my name partly because it was Hitler's wife's name, and partly because I was named after Miss World 1969 - I mean, how are you supposed to live up to that? Anyway, the main reason I hate is because my parents never called me by my full name unless I was in trouble. I now tell everyone to shorten because it still makes me scared if someone uses my full name!

Eva is too common to be automatically associated with Hitler’s wife, surely.

CanIinterestyouinasarcasticcomment · 07/05/2026 13:45

I'm Stacey, born in the mid 80's.

Growing up there was only 1 other Stacey in my school, who weirdly had the same surname as me, luckily she was 4 years younger so we weren't together at any time, I only realised when our bank books got mixed up in junior school.

I quite like my first name, I can't imagine being called anything else, but my middle name........I detest.

My name is Joanna, I was born in 1970. I like my name but hate when people call me Joanne (which happens far too often 🙄) For a long time I just went by Jo, so people wouldn't get it wrong, but I prefer my full name.

One of my DDs is called Joanna and it really annoys me when people say "Joanne" instead.

It's especially annoying when they put the emphasis on the first syllable (the "Jo" part of Joanne).

Her name is Joanna.

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 07/05/2026 13:55

I go by Jo all the time and have for years. Smile

Perhaps when she was growing up it was still very unusual so that association was stronger.
I didnt know of any Eva's growing up.

It was very unusual when I was young.

LittlefatTaffin · 07/05/2026 14:28

Melanie. Didn’t like so much when younger love now.

samsswampy · 07/05/2026 14:57

I was christened Linda but my mum changed it to Lindy a few weeks after because she thought it sounded nicer. I have spent all my life having to spell it out or if people misheard answering to Linda or Lindsey

AlicePottery · 07/05/2026 15:34

Alice in Wonderland ❤️
Who the fuck is Alice 🤬
Alice ça glisse au pays des saucisses 🤮

Sometimes I like my name. I get irrationally annoyed when someone else has the same name as me, especially at work it's my name 😅

Jimberley and I love it. So many options. Cute shortened to Jimi, yet Jimberley has more gravitas now I'm a high-flying High Court Judge.

Brilliant 😂😂😂

LordJohnGrey · 07/05/2026 17:38

Mines Shona born in Scotland in the early 60's have always loathed it. Dad chose it which as he was the English one of my parents I always thought was a bit much. 😀 Mum wanted Flora but my Grannie talked her out if it. Not sure its much better.

doggiesarefab · 07/05/2026 17:51

I’m Kathryn I love my name and the slightly unusual spelling

StepAwayFromGoogling · 07/05/2026 20:53

Victoria. Mid 1970s baby. Everyone calls me Vix. I will not answer to Vicky, I am not a Vicky. I like Victoria, but Vix is definitely my name.

Kayla83 · 07/05/2026 21:05

My name is Micheila, (Michaela) my Mom changed the spelling as she didn't like the traditional spelling. I'm a 70s baby and my Mom named me after the wildlife presenter Michaela Dennis. I like my name, it's unusual and I've only met 2 others with my name in the whole of my 56 years. I get called Michelle alot 🤦🏻‍♀️

JenniferJupiterr · 07/05/2026 21:08

Well, my parents did something very odd when they named me. I was born in 1971 but nobody ever believes this for a single second - until they meet me that is

from an email or letter or similar - they think I’m about 18.

because I have the improbable name of Ava Grace. Unheard of for n the 70s - everywhere now. I have a lot in common with a lot of ten year olds 😀

Fatandnotsofabulous · 07/05/2026 21:11

I have a massively common name. Don't particularly like the name but definitely prefer that there are thousands of us. I like that I am ungoogleable and that it makes me quite anonymous. Of course for some people they would prefer the opposite. I am a private person though and prefer to merge in and be under the radar in life!

Ha - my H calls me Vix !!

ImJodywithay · 07/05/2026 21:38

Obvious name change for this, as I know I have a few friends on here (mostly with unremarkable names, as it happens).

So my name is Jody and I was born in 1973.

I'm fairly neutral about my name, it has good and bad points.

Good points -
1.It became super popular about 10 years after I was born, so people will assume I'm younger than I really am (although they probably think I had a really hard life!)
2.It's quick and easy to spell and has a nice sound.
3.It's well known, without being super popular.

Bad points -
1.It became super popular about 10 years after I was born, and was a little declassé at that time.

  1. The most common spelling of it is Jodie, so others often mispell it.

All in all, it could be worse

Reportingfromwherever · 07/05/2026 21:40

I’m a Nicola Louise and I’ve always hated it as there are so many of us!
