What is your name and do you like it?

Inspired by the thread asking if people don't like their names. As someone trying to choose a name for our upcoming baby, it would be so useful to know what type of names people tend to like throughout life and which they hate and why etc. I was surprised on the other thread that so many people disliked having a popular name!

I realise this is very outing if your name is very unusual so you may not want to say it. I've obviously name changed. I'll go first!

Nicola (nickname Nicky) I'm a mid 80s baby so Nicola was still popular amongst my peers but not overly so. It was even more popular in the 70s. There was a couple of others in my year at school. I didn't hate my name but I would have preferred a more girly name when I was younger. I didn't like that Nicola is a boys name in other parts of Europe.
The vast majority of Nicolas are my age or older which is slightly ageing, so I'm wary of that when choosing my own kids names. I MUCH prefer Nicky and I'm glad I have a nickname option.
Overall I'm fine with it and can't imagine changing it but I'd probably choose something different for myself.

Alexandra - although no one calls me that in daily life I still love it

I think this is the name I would choose for myself if I had to hypothetically change my name.

Lucy.. born in the late 70’s. I like my name, my parents chose well for my brother and I, including our middle names, especially in that era.

Abouteffingtime · 05/05/2026 23:00

@Dyoulikeyourname I wanted to be called Nicola as a child, around ages 7 to 8, which was mid 80s. . My name is Charlotte. I love it. I think it suits mee and is fairly "classic". I HATE Charlie, its not me at all.

Mine's Deborah, named after Deborah Kerr the actress. I was born in 69 and growing up there weren't many Deborah's that I knew.

I love my name, but detest being called Debbie. That's not an abbreviation, it's a name in it's own right! And I don't like the name Debbie anyway. It's Deb, Debs or D in that preference order!

MincePieandBaileys · 06/05/2026 18:19

My name is Frances, and everyone calls me Frankie.

I'm fine with that.

gnomeparty · 06/05/2026 18:24

Adele. I like that it’s not super popular but not ridiculous😅

timoteigirl · 06/05/2026 18:29

Laura. Blurgh.....little house in the prairie......

BestieBunch · 06/05/2026 18:32

I’m an Alison also, but know as Ali… I bloody hate it!!!
Born early 80’s - but have only met Alison/Ali’s older than me.
Its such a boring hard name, all my friends names ended with a vowel or sounding vowel so always seemed softer and girlier. I prefer Alice / Alicia over Alison… always said I’d change my name but never did doh!

Leavesandthings · 06/05/2026 18:44

I have an uncommon name which has always been uncommon, and I saw recently on a list of the least used names in the UK/ones that are horribly out of fashion.

I neither like it nor have a problem with it. Meh.

Boudica70 · 06/05/2026 18:46

My name is Joanna, I was born in 1970. I like my name but hate when people call me Joanne (which happens far too often 🙄) For a long time I just went by Jo, so people wouldn't get it wrong, but I prefer my full name.

TheRozzers · 06/05/2026 18:49

SpringPuppie · 04/05/2026 21:53

My name is Joanne, very popular in my school year, there were four in my class and I work with three.
It’s a pretty boring name, I’d prefer Joanna.
My son’s name is Harry, he said he likes it. I’ve just asked his mate who is here now and he said he hates his name, he is called Bertie, they’re in their twenties.

Is that you Ms Rowling? 🧙🏻

TheAngryPuxie · 06/05/2026 18:50

I hate my name partly because it was Hitler's wife's name, and partly because I was named after Miss World 1969 - I mean, how are you supposed to live up to that? Anyway, the main reason I hate is because my parents never called me by my full name unless I was in trouble. I now tell everyone to shorten because it still makes me scared if someone uses my full name!

Tiddleypom1 · 06/05/2026 18:51

Mine’s Jessica but Jess to everyone. Early 80s child it was wildly popular. I think I’ve grown into it and yes I like it. My kids have more unusual names.

usedtobeaylis · 06/05/2026 18:54

My name was apparently quite popular in the decade before I was born and apart from one single person about 5 years older than me, I've only ever met people the same age as me with the same name. It seemed to have a moment in the early 80s. Never met anyone younger than me with the name either. I don't love it or hate it, but would probably err on the side of disliking it if pushed, especially with my random middle name tagged on.

Rainbow1235 · 06/05/2026 18:55

Mines Tanya 1970’s child . I don’t like it at all .

Catlover1705 · 06/05/2026 18:55

Alison, born in the 60s. I really like it and nn Ali.

AllJoyAndNoFun · 06/05/2026 18:57

Natasha (family call me Nat, friends call me Tash). 70's baby. I'm a bit ambivalent tbh.

ainsleysanob · 06/05/2026 19:00

Kate. I love my name and it suits me!

Notellinganyone · 06/05/2026 19:00

My name is Eva, I’m 59 and growing up it was very unusual in UK. Apart from a v brief phase in primary when I wanted to be called Caroline I’ve always liked it. It’s pretty universal, strong and I think it suits me. I’m a teacher so it’s been quite strange seeing it become more popular.

1249S · 06/05/2026 19:06

My name is Sophie.

There are millions of me! I once worked with 5 Sophie’s and we all had to have a nickname. So I see why people say it’s too popular.

But I love my name, always have always will. It’s beautiful in sound, spelling and meaning. It’s popular the world over so everyone understands and can pronounce it (although Filipinos had some difficulty understanding ph= f sound. Which I found funny considering the name of their country).

It’s a great name. I considered naming my baby Sophia but decided people would think it strange.

RubyTuesdayFTO · 06/05/2026 19:08

Kayleigh. Born late 70s and didn’t mind it until the mid 80s thanks to Marillion. That bloomin song was sung at me every day of my school life thereafter. Hate it now I’m pushing 50. Not many people know my real name.

dontforgettofloss · 06/05/2026 19:16

My name is Katherine, born early 80’s, but I’ve always been called Katie or Kate, I quite like Katie and Kate, but not Katherine, I wish my parents would’ve just put Katie on my birth certificate, apparently they thought I might prefer a more mature name like Katherine as I got older 🤔

Sunshinedayscomeon · 06/05/2026 19:17

Another Rebecca/Becky/Becks/Bex etc. I hate it. I never know what to be called and mostly don't care what people call me - except Becca.

It's a very 70s name and there are lots of Rebeccas that i meet - I just don't feel like a geniue one. LOL.

Similar to you but I am a Marion born in 1969.

Sounds hard and there are so many prettier versions - Marianna, Marianne.

Always hated it. Felt old for its time. People would comment that they had an auntie Marion - bit like Eileen, Geraldine, Maureen.
