Is Christopher boring?

MyMN · 27/04/2026 02:18

I've loved the name Christopher for years and am finally getting the chance to use it. Unfortunately, I saw one woman say that she knows 40 Christophers, Johns, etc. and would never consider using basic names like those for her own kids. (This was in a comment section where she was receiving criticism for naming her kids Rowdy, Arrow, and Dixie.) Seeing that discouraged me. I'm not someone who wants to give their child a super uncommon name. I actually like very traditional names, but I also don't want to pick a name that everyone will secretly be thinking is bland and boring.

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

One of my children is called Christopher. So I am biased when I say I love it. Not common these days. My Chris is 30.

CurlewKate · 27/04/2026 11:59

I have no idea what “a boring name” means. Rowdy is a deeply tedious name and indicates an “Oh, I’m such an individual, not like all the mundanes” deeply tedious parent. Christopher is a good solid name with some great shortenings-some more off the wall than others. In other words, it provides choices.

Mischance · 27/04/2026 12:02

What does it matter what others think? It is a great name. I would have had one if I had had a boy!

HoldItAllTogether · 27/04/2026 12:02

It’s a great name.

CurlewKate · 27/04/2026 12:02

Around 250 baby Christophers in the last couple of years. So 250 out of 300,000. There are unlikely to be 2 in a class!

Eastereggschocolateisthebest · 27/04/2026 12:03

I think it’s beautiful - you rarely hear it in full

will be perfect

MegMortimer · 27/04/2026 12:03

I like it. I like Kit as a diminutive too.

durdledoris · 27/04/2026 12:07

Lovely name, never dates

Sadless · 27/04/2026 12:21

I have a Christopher he's 18 now. I went with old names for all my children.
Better then having a common name what's everyone is called

evilharpy · 27/04/2026 12:35

I absolutely love it, although might have been biased as I have a much loved family member called Christopher. I haven't met any under the age of maybe 30 for a long while but it must be due a comeback, and I don't think it would sound dated at all.

Rowdy... there are no words really. I once knew a very bouncy labrador called Rowdy.

Specialneedsnightmare · 27/04/2026 12:41

Christopher is a great name. You simply can't go wrong with it.

It's a lovely name.
I have a cousin Christopher, his name is never shortened but some diminutives are Kit and Kester as used in Susan Howatch's Penmaric novels.
Nic Nairn, the TV Chef, has a brother Christopher who's name is shortened to Topher. A bit odd but it's maybe a Scottish thing.

I'd forgotten Kester as a diminutive of Christopher - particularly as I decided I wanted Henry abbreviated to Hal from the same book (Wheel of Fortune). Sadly, DH vetoed this, and I didn't have another boy anyway.

But, yes, Kester is lovely.

Firebird83 · 27/04/2026 14:02

Lovely name. I’d much rather hear of a little Christopher than yet another Albie, Freddie or Theo.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 27/04/2026 14:06

You don't get many young boys called Christopher these days, so it would sound quite refreshing! He is unlikely to have to be known as Christopher X at school, too.

Thistimearound · 27/04/2026 14:12

Christopher is great. All the older (40+) Christophers I know are known as Chris with the younger ones Kit. In any case, a pretty good name for nickname choices.

It hits the - sometimes hard to find - sweet spot of a well known, traditional name (no one will misspell or mispronounce) whilst also being pretty rare these days.

sallymonella · 27/04/2026 14:13

I like it. I hadn't really clocked that there aren't any young Chris's so I think it's due a comeback.

365RubyRed · 27/04/2026 14:21

My brilliant son is Christopher, he’s 36 and a star. Mostly known as Chris, never Kit or Topher.

Giraffehaver · 27/04/2026 22:31

It sounds so fresh and clean somehow. It's a good strong name and so sweet for a little one

Gagamama2 · 28/04/2026 09:17

Agree, it does sound fresh and clean and lovely in a way that other very popular 80’s boys names don’t yet

Wishmyhousewasbigger · 28/04/2026 09:21

How about Christy?

thefloorislavayes · 28/04/2026 09:21

It’s always been my fav boy name

RegalDiamondMonster · 28/04/2026 18:52

I'm not a fan of Chris - that is very dated to 80s and 90s - but Christopher with Kit as a shortening is lovely.

And not boring, there are very few in classrooms etc these days. Christopher is outside the top 200 in England and Wales, Kit is 157th.

LivingTheDreamish · 28/04/2026 20:19

Rowdy! Christopher is one of those classics you don’t hear much these days. It’s rather nice. Prefer Kit to Chris as a shortening.
