Is Christopher boring?

MyMN · Today 02:18

I've loved the name Christopher for years and am finally getting the chance to use it. Unfortunately, I saw one woman say that she knows 40 Christophers, Johns, etc. and would never consider using basic names like those for her own kids. (This was in a comment section where she was receiving criticism for naming her kids Rowdy, Arrow, and Dixie.) Seeing that discouraged me. I'm not someone who wants to give their child a super uncommon name. I actually like very traditional names, but I also don't want to pick a name that everyone will secretly be thinking is bland and boring.

It’s beautiful OP. Classic

jsku · Today 02:38

OP - it’s a nice name and you always liked it.
Do you really care what someone who called her kids - Rowdy, Arrow, and Dixie - think about your son’s name?
A person who thinks ‘Rowdy’ is a name is really not on the same wavelength with someone who likes traditional names.

Christopher is not bland and boring. It is traditional and will grow with your boy.
None of the ‘unique’ name that other person made up - will…

Upin · Today 02:39

I would not care about the opinion of anyone who named their children Arrow and Rowdy, really. Based on what you said, she was just upset to find out that the names she chose are widely disliked so felt bothered enough to attack more normal names. Try to avoid looking at too many posts about names. Doing so will ruin every name for you.

FunnyOrca · Today 04:51

Don’t take naming advice from Rowdy’s mother.

MrsLFii · Today 04:56

As above, a woman who inflicted Rowdy on a child wouldn’t be a woman whose opinion I would value. Christopher is lovely, my son was nearly a Christopher after two of the very best men I know.

SpiceGirlsNeedAComeBack · Today 06:31

Its a lovely name, one of mine has it as a middle name.

TappyGilmore · Today 06:38

It’s a lovely name. Much better to have something strong and traditional than, erm, Rowdy. (I don’t live in the UK and my country has stricter naming rules than the UK. I’m not sure that you would be allowed to name a child Rowdy here.)

Does she really know 40 Christophers? I don’t think it’s all that common, and I have a close relative with that name so do tend to notice others. And I certainly can’t think of anywhere near 40!

Lulu1919 · Today 06:41

It’s lovely
not sure how you feel about versions - but Kip is cute

SquigglePigs · Today 06:47

I really like it. It was on our shortlist for a boy before we knew DD was a girl.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · Today 06:49

I like Christopher either in full or with kit for short. Less keen on Chris

PygmyOwl · Today 06:50

Christopher is a really nice name.

Lucia573 · Today 06:52

I teach secondary and I don’t think it’s as common as it used to be. In fact, I don’t think I have a Chris right now. It’s a great name: go for it.

TerracottaBowl · Today 07:00

I don’t like it at all, but that’s completely irrelevant. I don’t like Arrow or Rowdy either! People’s tastes in names different. Christopher is a perfectly fine name.

Calliopespa · Today 07:03

No it's classic.

I like it. I knew one who was called Kippy which was sweet when he was small, though it didn't last long and he swapped to Chris. There are quite a few young Kits about now who don't use, and are not named, Christopher.

I also like John and doubt Rowdy's mum knows many who are currently small. It needs a renaissance.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · Today 07:05

Great name.

One of THE best boys names imo.
Christopher and Alexander are definitely top 5 names for me.

diff league to John / Peter/ Paul which are somewhat dullsville.

I also think its not commonly used anymore. Lots of Leo Harrison Freddie Oscar Archie etc... where i am

Satsuma55 · Today 07:07

It's a really lovely name.

Matildatoldsuchdreadfullies · Today 07:09

I really like Kit as a diminutive, too. Chris is okay. I don’t like Topher.

oldestmumaintheworld · Today 07:10

Christopher is a great name but I'm biased since we have several in my family. They are all, without exception lovely, thoughtful and kind men.
I'm not sure the same will be said of Rowdy!

SailingYachty · Today 07:12

There are a lot of men that are in their 30s/40s called Christopher, well certainly Chris’s! I know of 4 dads at the school gates (and have several exs called Chris!) I guess that is something to consider, since it was popular in the 80s so you’ll get a lot of Dads called it, not really an issue though, it’s probably due a return. He will be called Chris though.

domenica1 · Today 07:12

It’s actually pretty unusual as a kids’ name these days! I like it BM for family reasons but I have never encountered it with in any of my children’s classes. It’s more an 80s name so fairly unusual now. Go for it, it’s a classic!

OvernightBloats · Today 07:15

Not boring at all. Also not common among the younger generation.

Chris is classic, solid, timeless and an excellent choice. A name that means that he will not have to explain, spell, defend to other people.

I often think that parent's choices of trendy or unique names are selfish not taking into account that the child has to live with it!

Paaseitjes · Today 07:35

It might be less bad these days, but my brother is never ever the only Chris in the room. Are you OK with him going through life known by his surname or Chris Initial? Is a nice name, but my brother chose something more unusual for his kids. My name is similar, but slightly less bad.

MadamRaz · Today 07:36

Christopher was our chosen name for a boy but we had a girl instead. It's a lovely name, go for it!

Fraughtmum · Today 07:36

I love it

IsoldeWagner · Today 07:38

Ignore. Her choices are foolish imo.
Christopher is a lovely, classic name. He'll stand out amongst all the kids called Teddy and Sonny for sure.
