I do think Agnes / Aggie is an ugly name but seen a few girls called by Spanish version Inés which I think is pretty

I didn’t know that was the Spanish version. Spanish seems to have a knack of making names sound nice, including my own, which sounds far nicer in Spanish than English.

My friend called his daughter Lettice and I pronounced it Let - tice and was corrected by him, apparently it is pronounced same as the vegetable.

I think I’d say Leh-teech-eh hoping it had an Italian pronunciation 😁 I really can’t imagine inflicting the name Lettice (sounding like the salad vegetable) on to my child. 😕

Beryl
Farrah.

Although I am ready to hear that lots of posters have 5 of each in their child’s nursery!

And I also have to say that my mother was laughed out of calling me Emily because it was such an awful old fashioned name that would never ever come back!

And Victoria Coren Mitchell’s dd is called Barbara.

Winifred

My mother's name.
Not to many of those about
Except I do know a toddler called winnie I think it's lovely.
My son is a teen and he knows a sandra the same age which I was surprised at.
I think Agnes now sounds quite trendy

I know a young Joan, Mary, Margaret and Agnes!

Names I don’t think will come back are
Joanne
Stacey
Jane
Jennifer
Phyllis
Griselda
Bertha
Ann
Doris
Helen
Ursula
Yvonne
Susan
Amanda
Julie
Sally

I totally disagree with most of this list . I don’t see why classic names like “Helen “ or “Jane” would not come back into fashion in the future . They are just not popular at the moment. I remember at one time you would very rarely meet someone called Sadie who was not over the age of 80 and now it’s become popular with children again. You may be right about Griselda though .

I remember my gran saying Emily and Sarah were old lady names, and my mum saying the same about Eleanor!

Susan

I can see Joan and Eileen coming back to some degree.

I’m a Nicola Louise and I’ve hated my names forever. There are just so many of us that it’s not even outing to post this 😂 I was desperate to be called something more exotic when I was a child….. I really wanted to be called Liesl as I loved the Sound of music!

Ooh I loved the name liesl.
And heidi
Did think of naming my daughter one of those names, except I had boys.

I think Amanda derives from St Amandus/Amand. There was an Amanda in a Moliere play from the 17th century.
It might come back again in about 50 years or so

I knew an Agnes, she didn't like her name so she spelt it backwards and became Senga!

Very common in Scotland - this version.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · Today 10:40

I knew a Rina whose full name was Alexandrina, for Queen Victoria. She must have been born in the 1930s.

I know a 12yo Ursula.

There was an Ursula in my class at secondary school. Pretty name imo, but being named "Little Bear"? 🤷‍♀️😅

Aww, what's wrong with teddy bears?
I don't know where her name came from but the family is not Irish Catholic.

The name means "worthy of love", from the Latin, following the same pattern as Miranda = "worthy of admiration". Trying to think of other examples.

Fair enough, when you put it like that! 🧸 😁 I went to a convent school so that figures in my experience. Isn't it also used in Latin countries?

I'm hoping Chastity doesn't make a come back. God knows what Cher was thinking....

Yes used to be the done thing in the Highlands and Islands, and girls would end up with their father’s or grandfathers names. Often shortened to Ina, Dina, Nina or Rena.
