Help with girls names - not long left

Scabadadabadooo · 22/04/2026 17:47

I've decided to start a new thread with my new top names (I started the blossom one).

Id really appreciate some help with choosing a girls name, I have three weeks left and have gone round and round in circles.
The list is currently
Daphne
Luna
Marigold
Maeve
Elowen
Polly
Flora
Frankie (Francesca)
Lilianna

Daphne is a long term favourite, only hesitation is Daff doesn't appeal.
Luna I think is so pretty but is it substantial enough? Or just a bit trendy?
Marigold - fab nickname options. Fits my nature/flower preference.
Maeve fits our boys names best but we have a short surname starting in F and it kind of blends together.
Elowen - love this but not keen on Ellie
Polly - love, but bit nicknamey next to our other names?
Flora - butter an issue?
Frankie - DH fave but I'm not totally sold. Worried about Fran
Lilianna - bit frilly, I like Lily but find Lily too popular. Like the option of Annie too.

Any views welcome!

I just realised your the op who wanted to name your child blossom! Any of the names you have now on your list are much nicer than blossom. Go for whichever one sound less ridiculous when you stand at your front door and shout it in the street that usually helps

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 23/04/2026 12:02

I really like Flora and Frankie. I have a three syllable name which is never shortened - same with my sister. You can avoid Fran unless your daughter likes it, obviously.

Faves for me .. Elowen, Marigold and Polly.
You might like Mary Ellen.

Pyjamatimenow · 23/04/2026 14:21

Maeve is my favourite from your list. Don’t do Liliana. It’s such a mouthful

Scabadadabadooo · 23/04/2026 17:07

For those that like Marigold, what nickname would you default to? If any? Just interested.

If Maeve doesn't go with your surname, how about Maeva?

I really like Maeva! Thank you, I think that will go on the list. It sounds better with our surname for sure.

Is Lena pronounced Layna or Leena? I quite like it.
My DH vetoed Primrose due to the Prim bit. Although he also vetoed Marigold originally but he's kind of come round to it.

I know a Lee-na and a Len-ah! I really love it.

I know two adult Frankie, both swapped to Chess/ Chessie at around 15 yrs and hate Frankie, no one would dare call them Fran.

Also know two teenage Flora, both known as Flo. One likes the full name the other gives you the evil stare if you call her Flora, she is a teenager though and might love it when she’s older.

I like Polly best from your list, or do you like Pollyanna?

Marigold is nice, I’d shorten to Mary or Goldie, but none of my DC ended up with the shortening I’d thought they would.

Nicknames form organically. You don't need to plan them in advance. Don't worry about it.

Norastroud · 23/04/2026 20:16

My favourites on your list are Flora (possibly short for Florence) & Polly. Goodluck!

Xmasallergies · 23/04/2026 20:46

All are nice! Lillianna is the only one I haven’t heard at our primary school.

Giraffehaver · 23/04/2026 22:58

Marigold with shortened name Goldie is adorable

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 24/04/2026 05:57

Daphne.

I like Chess and Chessie as nicknames too. I wouldn't be fussed if she didn't want to be a Frankie. I just don't really like Fran.
There's something about Francesca to me that feels very elegant and versatile.
I'm not overly keen on Flo. I think Flora is lower down on my list to be honest.
I like Pollyanna but Im not sure I'd use it. Maybe Polly with Anna as the middle name though.

I know a Francesca who is never shortened. She doesn’t want to be and makes sure she lets everyone know who tried to call her Fran etc.

For marigold, I would probably go with mari (pronounced like marry). Goldie is horrible and makes me think of a rapper with a gold tooth.

Thewalrusandthecarpenter · 24/04/2026 15:18

Goldie will always be Simon Groom’s dog, for Blue Peter watchers of a certain age.

Scabadadabadooo · 24/04/2026 15:30

Would Francesca seem a bit surprisingly Italian next to Irish boys names? I like Frankie but just wondering if it's a bit of a miss-match, or if I'm overthinking this (probably) we are a mixture of English and Irish.

NamingNoNames · 24/04/2026 16:00

Names don't need to match the siblings' names.

emeraldrainbow · 24/04/2026 19:08

I love Polly!

emeraldrainbow · 24/04/2026 19:08

I love Polly!

Me too but Pollyanna is awful.

user1492757084 · 26/04/2026 09:53

Anastasia

LilyLemonade · 26/04/2026 14:32

Francesca doesn't seem especially Italian to me as it's well used in the UK.
It's a pretty name.

Scabadadabadooo · 26/04/2026 22:53

I think we are leaning towards Francesca.
Narrowed it down to Francesca, Marigold, Daphne or Maeve. I love Polly but our other boys all have quite strong names and I feel Polly is a bit nicknamey in comparison.
I love Marigold, but I was trying to imagine telling people she was called it when I was at a party this weekend and I wondered if it felt a bit too 'out there' for me.
Thinking of Francesca Blossom.

I like Maeve best but what about changing the ending - Maeva(h)?

Also like Frankie but on its own. Not as a shortened version of a longer name.

My friends daughter is Lillia which I also really like. Slight variation on your name above.

StellaOlivetti · 26/04/2026 23:33

Polly and Flora are gorgeous, both on my list.
