Dakota - girl or boy?

Is Dakota meant to be for a girl or a boy? If you were told that someone you know had just named their baby Dakota, what gender would you automatically assume the baby is?

I'd assume girl. I like it.

I think it's one of the few truly unisex names, like Rowan or Taylor.

Girls name but not a fan as I think of place first

I think of it being a girls name

Neither it’s a place. So many lovely names why use a non name

I see Dakota as a boys' name and quite American.

Some well known girls have been called Dakota to it is possibly now unisex.

Ellery, Avery, Jordan, Charlie, Reece, Leslie and Ginger are other boys' names that are similarly sometimes unisex.

I’d think it was a chavs girl name in the UK. Either way it’s a bizarre choice when you think of the myriad of names they could have chosen.

I know of two girls named Dakota (one a toddler and the other a pre-teen) however I think it's quite unisex and would work for a boy too.
