Is Dakota meant to be for a girl or a boy? If you were told that someone you know had just named their baby Dakota, what gender would you automatically assume the baby is?

To me it’s a unisex name that fits better for a boy.
My first thought is the Dakota people and then the US state.

I'd assume girl, but I wouldn't bet money on it. It would depend on the age of the person. With an older person it could go either way. I'd say younger Dakotas are mostly girls.

Girl, I think it's the "a" ending. Not a name I like but I suppose it is fairly gender neutral.
