How would you pronounce Brontë?

Bronteeorbrontay · 02/04/2026 14:32

Just that really. If you met a Brontë or Bronte, how would you automatically pronounce it?
Is it awful?
I quite like it. I always assumed it was Brontay but online I keep finding people are pronouncing it Brontee. I actually quite like both but I'd want to pick the one that is most commonly used.
We are not set on this name, but I've already got three kids and really struggling to find a name I don't associate with another child we know or a member of our huge family!

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Na-deen and Nay-deen - I get that one. But Francis has me flummoxed!

Fran-cis or Fraaaancis.

Fran-cis or Fraaaancis.

That’s just a regional accent thing. Like bath/bahhth, grass/grahhss.

Fran-cis or Fraaaancis.

Oh, well I'd say that's just a regional vowel thing rather than there being more than one way to say a name.

firstofallimadelight · 02/04/2026 18:39

Bront (like want) e

Morepositivemum · 02/04/2026 18:39

Adore Brontay- Brontee to me would grate after a while

Gowlett · 02/04/2026 18:40

Bron-Tay

Bronteeorbrontay · 02/04/2026 18:44

PleasantPedant · 02/04/2026 17:34

Wiki says it's Bronty - (/ˈʃɑːrlət ˈbrɒnti/, commonly /-teɪ/)

@Bronteeorbrontay , having typed it a few times on this thread, I suspect it will be Bronte a lot of the time not Brontë.

(Edit: didn't mean to quote anyone...)

I think I would just drop the ë to be honest and go with Bronte.

Other names we have considered are...
Frankie
Blossom
Breffni (total wild card from DH!)
Kaia
Elowen
Daphne
Raya
Aurelia (Rae)
Emerald (Emmie)
Lana
Agnes
Kitty

A total mish mash of styles tbh

So do people like it? Am I losing my mind?
I feel like I've been through every name in existence and have started to lose faith in my own judgment 😂

Hi OP I really like this name. It's different and sounds beautiful.
I'd pronounce it Bron- tay.
I'm a midwife and heard every name under the sun. This name is neither pretentious or lower class it's just a lovely name.
You're so right in saying a person becomes their name. Ignore the haters, call your daughter Bronte, it sounds lovely whatever age you are.

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 02/04/2026 19:02

I think it's a lovely name.
I vaguely know one and she pronounces it Brontay.

julesmontgomery · 02/04/2026 19:11

brawn-tay

hahabahbag · 02/04/2026 19:14

Brontee buy it’s a surname not a first name

My dgd is called Elowen and it's a lovely name. Her brother has the name of a famous author and it ends 'nte'. I think.I pronounce it wrong as I always say 'tee' and my dd says 'tay' but dgs isn't bothered!

Out of interest how do you pronounce Elowen? Is the emphasis on the 'o' or the 'el'
Ell-Owen, or Ella-wen

I'm going for Brontay, but that's because the Eng Lit teacher said it that way. It's an adopted name and does not need to be pronounced like the place in Italy.

When I followed the attached trail (in reverse) I noticed Brontë graves in both Church graveyards, Anglican and Presbyterian. Reverse adoption by Pruntys and Bruntys who were related to Patrick?

Is this REALLY a first name now? Oh god

Sorry, I think it sounds really tacky and cheap, like ChardoNAY.

it is a surname. Also, a small town near Mnt Etna where the main economy is growing pistachio nuts.

I say Ell-Owen, dd hasn't corrected me and that's what I hear when dd says it! Elowen is only 4 months old.

It's a lovely name It really isn't. It's both pretentious and downmarket at the same time.

Strong agree. It ought not to be possible for a name to be both things but it really is.

I'm thinking of the child/young person/adult here. We all know what a PITA it is to select the right accent on a keyboard - why would you do this to your child? Every time she wants to type her name she has to hover over the e until she gets the diaresis. If she's going to be in the UK, computer keyboards are unlikely to have it on the keys already.

Plus she'll have people assuming either she, or her parents, were big Brontë fans. Fine if they are, a bit silly if not. Surely that's still the first place people's minds go? Do you WANT idiots singing Wuthering Heights to her? Saying, 'Reader, I married him' all the time? Grin

Riapia · 02/04/2026 19:53

Why give your child a name that you need to ask how to pronounce?

Lararoft · 02/04/2026 19:55

I actually know a young woman with the name Brontë, she’s got a good professional career and is very pretty & intelligent with a nice personality.
Its pronounced Brontay.

Because some names have multiple pronunciations? I'm not asking how to pronounce it, I'm asking people how they would assume it was pronounced.
It's like Esme, I love the name but it can be pronounced two ways.

It's Ell-OW-enn. It's not ILL-ow-in, Ell-OW-in or Ella-wen.

Then pronounce the name whichever way you like best.

Breffni - bad breff
Kaia - Kigh-ah/Kay-a
Elowen - see pp
