How would you pronounce Brontë?

Just that really. If you met a Brontë or Bronte, how would you automatically pronounce it?
Is it awful?
I quite like it. I always assumed it was Brontay but online I keep finding people are pronouncing it Brontee. I actually quite like both but I'd want to pick the one that is most commonly used.
We are not set on this name, but I've already got three kids and really struggling to find a name I don't associate with another child we know or a member of our huge family!

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

On a keyboard, ë is Alt 0235. On a phone, press e until you get the choice of different e with accents.

YerMotherWasAHamster · 02/04/2026 14:49

BronTay but sort of only half saying the y. In my accent there's kind of a stop. You go as though you are going to say BronTay emphasis on the T in tay and ending with a full Y sound, but stop short halfway through the y. Not quite a glottal stop but maybe half of one or something, so you dont do the release part, it just ends the word early.

I cant explain it. Im sat here saying bronte over and over again trying to describe it.

A fuck up. Maybe?

Piglet89 · 02/04/2026 14:50

Yeah I think it’s awful. Sorry.

The two little dots are umlauts. The show you that the letter is pronounced separately. Like Zoë or Chloë

They're not umlauts. Smile

PleasantPedant · 02/04/2026 14:51

They're not umlauts. Smile

Are they die something?

7238SM · 02/04/2026 14:53

I'd pronounce it like Bronte beach in Aus- Bront-ee.

I grew up abroad, lived in 2 other countries and had never heard it pronounced Bron-tay till I moved to the UK.

Ineedanewsofa · 02/04/2026 14:54

I would say Bron-tay (like the sisters) which I like the sound of but if you are anywhere near Essex it’ll get pronounced Bront-eeee which sounds awful IMO - there’s a woman on instagram called moneymum, her child is called Bronte and it sounds awful in her broad Essex accent!

Dexterrr · 02/04/2026 14:54

Brontay

As in the annoying character in the final season of You. Named herself after Charlotte/ Emily/ Anne

YerMotherWasAHamster · 02/04/2026 14:54

I was nearly right. I googled.
Diaeresis.

Listlostlast · 02/04/2026 14:55

Bronteeorbrontay · 02/04/2026 14:46

I'm liking these answers as I prefer Brontay.
I just didn't want to be saying 'no not Bronteeee Brontaaay' like Hyacinth Bucket!

😂
Honestly I think you’ll get a pretty even split of them both. I know most people are sayin ‘brontay’ on here but I knew a Brontë for a long time and she was Brontee despite her mum trying for Brontay and even the girl herself trying to correct people. She’d given up by year 8 or so 😂 I guess ultimately if you don’t mind either version, then fine, but if there’s one you don’t, I wouldn’t do it!

godmum56 · 02/04/2026 14:55

Bronty no a in it.

NorthFacingGardener · 02/04/2026 14:55

Brontay.
Is this for a girl or a boy?

PleasantPedant · 02/04/2026 14:56

YerMotherWasAHamster · 02/04/2026 14:53

Are they die something?

Die hard? SmileDiaeresis or dieresis. As pp, it's an anomalous use of one.

VimtoDemon · 02/04/2026 14:57

Brontay

wishfulthinking25 · 02/04/2026 14:57

Bron tee

Tillow4ever · 02/04/2026 14:58

Bron-Tay

NigellaDelia · 02/04/2026 15:00

I know a girl called Bronte and her parents pronounce it Bron-tay

It's a lovely name, really suits her and everyone knows how to spell it. It suited her when she was a baby and, now that she's growing up, it seems like a name that will suit her as an adult.

Everyone presumes that her DM is a Bronte fan but both parents just liked the name

Snowie99 · 02/04/2026 15:00

Brontay but please no

Moltenpink · 02/04/2026 15:01

I’ve never heard anyone say it with an ee, it sounds nice either way though

PleasantPedant · 02/04/2026 15:02

It's a lovely name It really isn't. It's both pretentious and downmarket at the same time.

ginasevern · 02/04/2026 15:03

Most people in the UK would pronounce the sisters (Charlotte, Anne, Emily) as Brontay. So if I came across the name, that's how I would automatically say it. But I think Brontee is probably more accurate as the name was changed from the Irish surname "Brunty" by the sisters' father probably to sound more genteel.

Bronteeorbrontay · 02/04/2026 15:05

We are not Bronte fans particularly. Although I did enjoy Jane Eyre. I think it just fits my long criteria of
Not too common
Fairly unisex
Fits with Irish siblings names (loosely)
Quite cool
Distinctive (not keen on names that all sound similar, Isla, Ayla, Lyra etc)
Don't know anyone called it

But I realise it might sound pretentious to some or 'try hard' or wherever.

Tryagain26 · 02/04/2026 15:05

I would pronounce it Brontee. Like Emily Brontë

SausageOfAmbiguity · 02/04/2026 15:05

Bronya is nice.
Bronwyn.
Bryony.

That's all I'm saying.
