Most 'correct' spelling of Lilianne?

AnyPomegranate · 31/03/2026 15:38

I'd really like to incorporate the name of my beloved auntie, Leanne. I really like the name Lilianne but there so many variants that I'm struggling to pick just one - there's Lillianne, Liliane, Lilyanne etc.

I'd like to pick the most basic / accepted version of the name. This seems to be Lillian, but I think most people would pronounce this as 'Lily-UN' and not 'Lily-Anne'?

Any ideas on how to come to a decision?! TIA!

Lily-Ann
it was a clothing label from the 1950s and it was spelt like that

GoldenRosebee · 31/03/2026 15:45

I would not pick hyphen myself, but I agree Lily-Anne is best... but personally prefer Lillian.

LassiKopiano24 · 31/03/2026 15:46

I like the Lilianne spelling but think people may just presume it’s Lillian spelt different. Maybe Lilyanne? Or Lily and 1st name and Anne as the middle? Or you could just call her Leanne?

Needmorelego · 31/03/2026 15:47

I've always pronounced Lillian as "Lily-Anne".
Lovely name.
I would personally either go for the traditional spelling (Lillian) or Lily-Anne.

NigellaDelia · 31/03/2026 15:48

I know one ~ she's from Scotland (not sure if that makes a difference!) and her name is Liliane ~ she pronounces it Lily-arn

I've always thought it's very pretty. Nice for a baby/child but also suits an adult

TofuTuesday · 31/03/2026 15:50

Just use Leanne as a middle name? Unless it’s a male version/female version once the name is different it seems a bit pointless.

Watchoutfortheslowaraf · 31/03/2026 15:56

I would opt for hyphen to show it’s not pronounced like Lilian. I’d go for Lily-Anne

I do actually prefer the spelling and pronunciation of Lilian though

other options to include Leanne-

Leanna
Eliana
Leah
Annie/Anne/Anna
Annalise/Annalie/Annalia

Thank you for your opinions all!

I don't personally like the name Leanne and I'm not keen on hyphenated names like Lily-Ann. But I do love her to bits so it would be nice to honour her in my own little way.

I think Lillian is the most classic

Would you consider changing the two halves of her name around and using the name Annelie? I was at school with a girl of this name and thought it was so sophisticated compared with all the Julie's, Karen's, Jacqueline's and Susan's who formed the majority of our class!

She pronounced it Ann-eh-lee

allmycats · 31/03/2026 16:28

Lillian is the classic spelling and I would pronounce it as Lilyan

RoyalPenguin · 31/03/2026 16:30

Lillian is the nicest spelling IMO, but I agree with you about the pronunciation. Personally I would choose that (both spelling and pronunciation).

badboss2020 · 31/03/2026 16:32

Thing is, Lily-Anne or Lilian or Lilianne (which I don’t think is a thing?) isn’t Leanne. They are completely different.
I agree though that Annelie might be ok?
if you really don’t like the name Leanne I don’t think some other name starting with L is much of a tribute.

TallulahBetty · 31/03/2026 16:34

This place is so weird. Lily-Ann is NOT said the same as Lilian.

WildLeader · 31/03/2026 16:34

Liliane is how it’s spelled in Portuguese, and it looks pretty like that too

Says who?
They sound the same to me.

SuperMarioToadPrincessPeach · 31/03/2026 16:42

My Nan was a Lilian and it was pronounced Lily-un. Not Lily Ann. So for me they aren’t the same.

midgetastic · 31/03/2026 16:45

lilianne

RegalDiamondMonster · 31/03/2026 16:58

I know mumsnet dislikes hyphens but Lily-Anne is the best spelling to guarantee your pronunciation and i think it's pretty. Lilianne good as well.

NamingNoNames · 31/03/2026 17:26

Lilian rhymes with Gillian not Marianne. I'd go for Lilianne.

I must have odd hearing because Gillian and Marianne rhyme to me 🤷

You have very odd hearing. One is Jill-yun and the other Marry-Anne.

It's accent dependent I guess. For me I agree with you on Marianne but Gillian is Jill ee un, not Jill Yun.

NamingNoNames · 31/03/2026 19:11

Jill-y-un or Jill-yun but not Jilly-Anne
Same as Susan isn't pronounced Susanne.

Thank you - my reasoning is that, phonetically, the name 'Leanne' still appears in the name Lilyanne (just with a 'Li' at the start!). It's a nice nod to her without having to be the exact same name
