Most 'correct' spelling of Lilianne?

AnyPomegranate · 31/03/2026 15:38

I'd really like to incorporate the name of my beloved auntie, Leanne. I really like the name Lilianne but there so many variants that I'm struggling to pick just one - there's Lillianne, Liliane, Lilyanne etc.

I'd like to pick the most basic / accepted version of the name. This seems to be Lillian, but I think most people would pronounce this as 'Lily-UN' and not 'Lily-Anne'?

Any ideas on how to come to a decision?! TIA!

The French spelling is Liliane and it is pronounced Lily Anne, more or less.

I must have odd hearing because Gillian and Marianne rhyme to me 🤷

Gillian is Gilly-un, not Gilly-ann.

Same as Marianne is Mari-Anne not like Marion.

BillieWiper · 31/03/2026 19:28

If you want people to pronounce it with the Anne being emphasised rather than just an 'un' sound, then you should probably have it as Lily-Anne?

DalmationalAnthem · 31/03/2026 19:43

You could give your aunt a list of names that you and the father both love and she can pick one?

Honouring someones name when you don't like the name and using a completely different one defeats the purpose.

Xmasallergies · 31/03/2026 20:20

Lilianne

YellowStockings · 31/03/2026 20:31

My grandma was called Liliane, a gorgeous name!

Says who?
They sound the same to me.

Lilian is LIL-e-un.

Lily-Ann is Lily-ANN.

Completely different names.

You have very odd hearing. One is Jill-yun and the other Marry-Anne.

I would say/hear Gillian as "Jilly-Anne".
(except for that actress from Neighbours way back in the 80s who apparently said her name with a "Guh" not "Juh")

Needmorelego · 31/03/2026 21:29

I think I don't really hear much difference between the "un" or "anne".
It must be my hearing and accent 🤷

Giraffehaver · 31/03/2026 22:28

I know a Lilianne and she's in her forties. Suits her fine although she's mostly Lil to us!

ASuitableName · 31/03/2026 23:04

I know a French Liliane pronounced similarly to Lily-Anne. I think it’s a pretty name

PicklePalace · 31/03/2026 23:42

But you’d be honouring her with a name that is completely and utterly different . Which makes no sense

user1492757084 · 01/04/2026 12:31

I would choose from these..
Lilianne
Callianne
Gillianne
Sallianne
Julianne
Pollianne
Valianne

Do the names Marian and Marianne sound the same to you?

Do the names Marian and Marianne sound the same to you?

Pretty much yes 🙂

HisNotHes · 02/04/2026 00:27

The recognised spelling is Lilian but you’re correct that people would pronounce it Lily-un. However I think most would still assume that pronunciation even if you spelt it Lilianne or Lilyanne.

If I were you I’d just use Leanne as a middle name.

patooties · 02/04/2026 00:45

I had an auntie Lily whose name was Lill-yun

Really? How about “yun” and “yanne?”
(Lili-un/Lili-anne - Mari-un/Mari-anne)

Edited

If I say them out loud in slow-mo then yes I can hear a difference.
But in regular everyday conversation I don't really notice it.
It's all just variations in accents to me.

Lillian rhymes with billion. It's not Lily ANNE.

As I have said it's just how I HEAR it.
It all depends on people's accents to me.
My own name is pronounced differently by various members of my own family due to their accents.

This place is so weird. Lily-Ann is NOT said the same as Lilian.

Agree my great grandmother was Lilian pronounced Lili-un

PauliesWalnuts · 07/04/2026 19:32

I worked with the most wonderful woman who was half Lebanese and half Swiss I think. She was a formidable, intelligent, amazing woman. She spelt it Liliane. Ha - makes me smile just thinking of her.

Pernicketywishes · 07/04/2026 19:38

Liliana is pretty?
(but pronounced Lily-ARNA)

Otherwise I’d go with Lilianna

You could go with Lily as a first name and Anna as a second name of course.
