Thoughts on 2 middle names?

Thinking about possibly having 2 middle names for baby boy - but I also don’t want to make it a hassle for us or for him in the future with legal documents or paperwork in general.

Thoughts or Experiences?

Let me know!

I have two middle names. It’s never been a hassle, I quite like having two.

NigellaDelia · 27/03/2026 22:43

Some of my family have 2 middle names but it's because their parents gave them a grandparents name from both sides of the family . It's never been a problem with paperwork. Although if someone had 3 very long forenames and a long surname there might be an issue with space when filling forms in

I don't think it's unusual to have 3 forenames and I know one person who has 4 which I think is a bit excessive but there may have been a good reason which I'm unaware of

Something like George Arthur Campbell Smith or Thomas Noah Marcus Smith would be fine.

I wouldn't go for Nathaniel Christopher Alexander Smith (too long) or Thomas Noah-Marcus Smith (hyphen can cause problems).

DD has two middle names and no issues. My SIL does too and no issues well into adulthood.

I agree with pp that you don’t want them to all be long names though. Some forms have limited characters.

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/03/2026 22:59

DH has two middle names. One is a family surname used as a fore name. He only actually uses his 2nd name and surname.
DS also has 2 middle names.
I have no middle names.

Did you mean to post this?

I don't even like having one middle name, seems pointless, but use as many as you want.

NamingNoNames · 28/03/2026 13:44

I don't see the point of middle names either especially if the middle name is a filler middle name like Rose or James.

OP, if you do not have the same surname as the father, get the baby registered with your surname.

Both my boys have two for the simple reason that dh and I couldn’t agree on 1 so we chose 1 each.
It’s not been an issue at all. Raised an eyebrow or two when announced but literally never mattered since.

Calliopespa · 28/03/2026 14:52

I like two middle names. Why not. It's not that big a hassle.

NamingNoNames · 28/03/2026 15:21

@Calliopespa , I just don't see the point of them. I can if the first name and surname are very ordinary.

mathanxiety · 28/03/2026 15:25

Two middle names is not a problem, in my experience.

There are no problems with paperwork.

singswithitsfingers · 28/03/2026 15:46

I have two middle names and it’s never been a problem.

DS has 2 middle names. Never been an issue with paperwork, I'm not sure he even puts them on everything.
Only one of them is on his driving license though. No idea why.

CurlewKate · 28/03/2026 15:56

My children both have two middle names. They are significant family names and they both like having them. Why wouldnmt why?

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 29/03/2026 21:59

My sons have two middle names, no issues so far

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 29/03/2026 22:07

I always wished that I had my Mum's name as a second middle name; a friend of mine at high school had that and I thought it was SO COOL I never had a daughter, though...

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 29/03/2026 22:10

I can’t see the point.

LoserWinner · 29/03/2026 22:48

My parents gave all of us two middle names. It has the practical advantage that when using just initials, eg at work, it’s less likely that my initials will be the same as anyone else’s. When filling in forms, there’s usually enough space for all my names, but if not, I just drop one of them.

CwinkleCwinkle · 29/03/2026 22:52

Lots of my family have 2 middle names and it's never been a problem. My daughter shares both of her middle names with my mum and I love that.

Why couldn’t you do that for a son?

CurlewKate · 01/04/2026 17:18

Why couldn’t you do that for a son?

I presume she means she specifically wanted her mums name. And most people aren't giving their sons female names.

MrsFionaCharming · 01/04/2026 20:43

I have 2 middle names. It was a bit of a pain back in the day of paper forms with a box for each letter, but since everything has gone online I no longer have issues.

User6761 · 01/04/2026 22:19

My partner has a long first name and two long middle names (along the lines of Alexander Sebastian Jonathan) - it is a pain with some forms and one name is often dropped e.g
on our council tax bill. He just views them as an inconvenience - they have no particular meaning for him. I have a short first name and no middle name - never wished I had one.

PermanentTemporary · 01/04/2026 22:23

Ds has two. His first name is entirely his then one each from each side of the family. Total haul is eight syllables. I think he quite likes it.
