Is Sebastian overdone? What does it bring to mind?

OP posts:

I only know one Sebastian currently. I think of the red crab and then a boy I was friends with about 30 years ago

bananabug · 27/03/2026 14:01

I really like the name Sebastian.

Tonissister · 27/03/2026 14:02

It's a good, classic name. I like it. And Seb is very cute for a younger boy.

RoyalPenguin · 27/03/2026 14:05

I like Sebastian a lot.

changedusername190 · 27/03/2026 14:28

I went to school with a Sebastian who was always known as Bassy. His poor mum used to say “it’s Sebastian actually” but she was the only person I heard say his proper name.

Calliopespa · 27/03/2026 14:47

I knew a couple growing up and didn't mind it, but it has definitely changed vibe from an unusual name, probably seen as a bit posh, to a name "doing the rounds" and I believe has been popularised by Sebastian Vettel.

It definitely isn't the slightly posh, fairly unusual name it once was. I also really don't like Seb or Bass or Bastian.

Bellybellas · 27/03/2026 15:04

I don’t like Sebastian - it sounds pompous and reminds me of sebaceous and bastard.

The nicknames Seb, Sebby or Basty are not great either.

SuperMarioToadPrincessPeach · 27/03/2026 16:50

I know two.

coolcahuna · 27/03/2026 16:54

I absolutely love this name

mrsCtheRed · 27/03/2026 16:56

It just instantly makes me think of the "overheard in Waitrose" stories

Fletchasketch · 27/03/2026 16:59

My partner is Sébastien (half French) he finds it gets misspelled a lot, but I just love it. He’s almost exclusively called Seb by his friends.

BoleynMemories13 · 27/03/2026 17:01

As a full name, I'm not at all keen. I do love the short form Seb though.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 27/03/2026 17:08

I only know one Sebastian and he’s 15. I can’t think of any others in my kid's secondary school. I do like the name Seb as a cute nickname.

MissSophiaGrace · 27/03/2026 17:16

Love it.

IDrinkTeaAllTheTime · 27/03/2026 17:21

I really like the name Sebastian. I used to live in Germany and it was pretty common there. I’ve noticed it making a bit of a comeback in the UK over the last few years, but there seems to be a bit of a sneery attitude from some people who think it sounds posh or pretentious. I think it’s just a classic name.

Splantes · 27/03/2026 17:22

Cute. Out of 10 boys in my child's infant class, 2 are Sebastians. You just don't know what other names are common in your catchment area.

alexdgr8 · 27/03/2026 17:24

It's a fine name.
Classic.
Both ancient and modern. For once someone starting a baby name thread with a sensible suggestion.

Moveoverdarlin · 27/03/2026 17:26

Really great name. I think years ago it was seen as a bit poncy and posh, but I know a couple and they’re just nice normal lads.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 27/03/2026 17:26

I’m probably in a minority but I really dislike it. Like a previous poster it reminds me of bastard. I don’t think it’s over used though.

exhaustedandoverit · 27/03/2026 17:27

I loved it and wanted it for DS until Sebastian in Corrie put me off it 😂.
DD said if I’d used the name she’d have nick named him sea bass so I’m quite glad I swerved it.
I still think it’s a nice name though

worrisomeasset · 27/03/2026 17:30

It has a Brideshead vibe. It will always remind me of Sebastian Flyte and his special friend Aloysius.

Sebastian
SoftIce · 27/03/2026 17:30

I don't like Se-bas-chun. I like Se-bas-tee-an.

Fifiesta · 27/03/2026 17:54

SoftIce · 27/03/2026 17:30

I don't like Se-bas-chun. I like Se-bas-tee-an.

Thankfully I don’t know anyone who would mangle the pronunciation to match your first example.
It has been used in our family, so thumbs up from us.

SoftIce · 27/03/2026 18:04

@Fifiesta It is not as uncommon as you think. Google "pronunciation of Sebastian" 😄
I agree that Se-bas-chun is horrible.

NamingNoNames · 27/03/2026 18:21

It was "posh or pretentious" in the days when Waugh was writing. It's not now.
I'm not keen.

He probably has a sister called Matilda or Amelia.

I agree that Se-bas-chun is horrible.
