Help I don't like any boy names

SometimesIcantsleep · 11/03/2026 20:20

Just found out today I'm having another boy, I'm gutted not to be using my girl name as I was convinced this was going to be a girl. I have both a girl and boy already, and really struggled last time, I ended up just letting my partner choose his name because I didn't like any of the thousands of names I looked at. I didn't love the name he chose, but it has grown on me and it suits our little boy and everyone loves it.

I don't like anything that comes up on the naming websites or google searches; looking for uncommon/unusual but not weird/made up names

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Is there a name of a loved now deceased member of your family or your DHs that you could choose as a way of honouring their memory?

MotherOfCrocodiles · 12/03/2026 07:20

If you can’t think of a name you like just for the sound, how about choosing the name based on a friend or family member (can be a variant) or a favourite character or historical figure?

user2848502016 · 12/03/2026 07:20

What are your other children’s names? What kind of thing do you like?

We were similar when having both our girls and had a girls name sorted but couldn’t agree on a boy’s one we both loved. We have two girls so we never had to actually make a decision on a boy’s name.
We probably would have gone for something traditional but not too fussy - like Alexander

I think you need to stop overthinking it. Most names are fine and you’ll be focused on the child and love them with any name. No such thing as perfect until it’s been picked.
Have some checklist ie initials shouldn’t spell anything funny, spelling should be easy/ obvious, etc and let your partner choose his favourite if you genuinely don’t like any.
Also, how can your girl name be outing when it hasn’t been used or shared with anyone? People just really want to help you on here.

Lando (there are at least 2 of these locally, so fits the ‘uncommon but not too uncommon’ theme!)

Joel

Nicholas

Victor

Hugh

Jackson (don’t actually know any but masses of Hudson, Harrison, Greyson etc)

Laurie

Liam

Haha Zebulon is the French version of Julia Donaldson’s Zog. I’m adding it to my shortlist!

I know exactly how you feel about boy’s names OP - so hard. My favorite names of boys I know are: Thiago, Pau, Lysander, Rodrigo, Mario. I think Shakespearean characters have great names. Or you could try looking at top 100 lists around the world to just throw things wide open. I know a little Icelandic Baldur and a Dutch Chendo.

GriseldaandMike · 12/03/2026 09:12

Do you have a favourite book, film or TV show with a male character you like? My DSs are both named after men in books I love. Their names gave me a warm fuzzy feeling because they reminded me of stories I love. Now I love their names because they are theirs.

PickledElectricity · 12/03/2026 09:13

Call him Jonathan.

I honestly don't have a type, it just has to be right, the only think I would say is I don't like "traditional" as in the kind of names you find in the monarchy, I love them on my friends kids and love them for their family, but not for me or mine

My entire family know if I was ever to have another girl it's the name I'd choose it's never been a secret, Ive never been one to be bothered if others don't like the names I pick, if I said my other kids names along with that it'd be very obvious, I have pregnant family members as active users of mumsnet, maybe I will come back and update when I have
told them, planning on it this weekend 🙂

I like it short for Orlando too.

If you like that, do you like Marlo?

NigellaDelia · 12/03/2026 16:08

I read a monthly Amish-Mennonite magazine which includes births, marriages & deaths

Looking through the most recent one there have been baby boys named

Bridger

Lincoln

Thaddeus

Wyatt

Weston

Beckett

Flint

Fletcher

Zander

Silverbirchleaf · 12/03/2026 16:52
