i am asking only because i dont know ANY scotts at all and ondered if there was some sort of bad reason this is so...or that its just died out! This baby will be our only child born in scotland, so i thought scott was quite fitting and a good 'boy/bloke' name. What do you think?

Yeah - it's quite solid and definitely associates well with his birthplace.

If I were having a Scottish baby I might look at Lewis or Fraser or Callum

LuLuBai · 17/06/2008 12:50

BTW - I meant solid in a good way. As in strong and masculine

LadyThompson · 17/06/2008 12:51

You don't hear it much nowadays. I know one under ten. Shouldn't think any sinister reason for it getting less popular, except that people seem less drawn to these no nonsense names these days. Personally I think it's quite nice.

saywhat · 17/06/2008 12:51

i wanted something that couldnt be shortened too :D so no lewie, or frase or cal! (i do like all those names though, the full versions!)

Scott is a fine name.

Another fine Scottish name is Bruce which seems to have fallen out of favour, possibly because of the Bruce Forsyth links!

benandoli · 17/06/2008 13:36

scott is a bit chavvy!

MaryAnnSingleton · 17/06/2008 13:40

Bruce is great ! not keen on Scott
You could have Alec/Alex
Hamish
Murdo
Ewan
Hector

tassisssss · 17/06/2008 13:42

like it!

also like Calum, Cameron, Finlay, Alasdair, Alexander and Hamish

tassisssss · 17/06/2008 13:42

Struan, Stewart

Sanguine · 17/06/2008 13:45

There aren't many scotts these days, but I like it all the more for that reason .

We went for Stephen, again, out of favour these days.

LuLuBai · 17/06/2008 13:47

Oh Bruce is cool. And very Scottish.

Nancy66 · 17/06/2008 13:49

Scott was one of those names that was very popular in the 70s - like Darren - that has just gone out of fashion. i'm afraid i'd group it in with Darren, Gary, Carl etc too.

Bruce is great though and I really love Hamish.

saywhat · 17/06/2008 13:51

chavy? What does that mean?

Bruce is nice, but it doesnt make me think..yes thats the name for me! I LOVED hamish, but hubby didnt like it.

Chavy - means Chav sounding. ie common or a bit 'council estate' - very snobby but the best way to sum it up.

bonnibaby · 17/06/2008 13:53

I love the name Scott,
Would have been on our list but doesnt go with our surname.

saywhat · 17/06/2008 13:55

ah i see, very snobby yes!

i have a scottish baby with a scottish name love scottish names obviously

foxymagoo · 17/06/2008 13:59

Scott is fab - very strong and bold and not tinky in the slightest IMO. It was on my short list but our surname is v. Scottish so ds's name would have been a bit too tarten shortbread.

All the Scott's I've ever know have been lovely guys...

LilRedWG · 17/06/2008 14:01

I know an amazing Scott. He is a happily married, funny, caring, well educated stock broker, with one year old twins and another on the way - a great endosement for the name!

saywhat · 17/06/2008 14:02

well my ex was a scott but DH doesnt mind, and he was a lovely guy i was just a cow back then!

LilRedWG · 17/06/2008 14:03

endorsement

LuLuBai · 17/06/2008 14:03

oooo - I would really avoid using any exes names

saywhat · 17/06/2008 14:06

i was 17 then, so it was a long time ago, and not a serious thing! He also lives abroad now too, and i have no contact, so i am sure it wont be an issue! As i say DH doesnt care in the slightest, he is the laid back sort (as in horizontal)
