My sister in law has just had a baby girl and has called her Hero. I am delighted for her of course but I just can't get my head around her name. What do you think?

Each to their own I say!

FrannyandZooey · 17/06/2008 08:33

nice classical allusions there but a bit unusual these days as hero generally has another meaning

I am sure you will get used to it as you get to know and love your niece
congratulations btw!

I find it impolite to comment on the name of a new born baby.

But if this were theoretical I'm sure I would have an opinion...

LuLuBai · 17/06/2008 08:35

Ha ha ha- I read this wrong - I think I just assumed it was a baby boy. It's exactly the sort of Sci-Fi name my husband would like to choose if we had a boy (the other night he suggested "Vengeance" and "Sword" - both firmly vetoed and I'm praying for another girl).

moyasmum · 17/06/2008 08:35

Lovely name ,shakespearian and japanese, what are people like around her way?

They might give her some grief, until they catch up. A non japanese boy might have more problems.

Rosa · 17/06/2008 08:36

mmm different and I respect other peoples choice however not for me.

Was surprised to hear it's a girl's name. I've never heard it before (my knowledge of greek legends obviously not up to standard), and if I heard a child of that name I'd expect it to be a boy.
I think the child is in for a bit of teasing as she gets older, but it's not the worst name around. A lot depends on the type of people the family are; around here it'd be laughed at all the time.

LuLuBai · 17/06/2008 08:39

Oooh - the Hero and Leander story does put a new perspective on it. Very romantic.

Shakespeare, yes. But Hero threw herself off a tower methinks.

I knew a girl whose name it was, she had a rare locked in syndrome, but was very intelligent...I'm not sure what happened to her.
Did your SIL explain why they chose the name?

hf128219 · 17/06/2008 09:11

SIL just loves the name. I just can't imagine shouting it out in Asda.

and certain accents can make it sound even worse by dripping the 'h'

eeeeeeeeerooooooooooo gerrof the snickers, i told you before

JRocks · 17/06/2008 09:21

I like it. But probably wouldn't use it. Or would I?

hf128219 · 17/06/2008 09:23

That's the thing - liking it and using it are two different things.

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 17/06/2008 10:06

well I think liking it and NOT using it because not everyone will like it, is sad
so good for them, I say

Heifer · 17/06/2008 10:11

I like it (on someone elses child, not mind) but would assume it was a boy name.

I may also chuckle if it was the name of a child that was a bit wimpy/wet. Tis a strong name, a lot to live up to I think...

hf128219 · 17/06/2008 10:15

Oh god, now her MIL has said and I quote 'I wouldn't call the dog that'.

OP posts:
FrannyandZooey · 17/06/2008 10:19

fgs give them some support
it's a perfectly good albeit unusual name - they must be feeling gutted people are being so rude about it

Bronze · 17/06/2008 10:21

I'm glad shes called a girl it not a boy like some might. The MIL is just plain rude.

hf128219 · 17/06/2008 10:24

I have told SIL I like it and everyone else should just but out. The MIL is a typical French lady - very glamorous - and very opinionated. No offence to the French!
