My sister in law is thinking of Lola if she has a girl.
Does anybody like it?

Nancy, that's the danger of choosing an unusual name suppose. Or not the danger, but the small risk.

eg, if somebody called their daughter Myrtle and it was just very old-lady chic, unusual and ahead of the fashion curve, then the parents could pat themselves on the back. But then if it turned out that a Myrtle had murdered a child.......the name would be toxic overnight, and the child would be stuck with a name forever associated with something awful.

Myrtle just an example. I like the name!

Elkat · 18/06/2008 18:14

Sorry, but I wouldn't use it. Whenever I hear it, it makes me think 'tart'. If you're cool with that, then go ahead and use it, but do be aware that some people will think 'tart' whenever they hear your daughter's name. I know I always think it.

mamamamama · 18/06/2008 18:19

You could always go for Dolores which is the traditional long version of Lola.

cosima · 18/06/2008 18:20

prefer lois

surreylady · 18/06/2008 18:30

Just called our baby Tortoise Lola .....

Dottoressa · 18/06/2008 18:32

Dolores is Lolita's full name, isn't it?

Definitely a no-no for most people...

SNoraWotzThat · 18/06/2008 18:44

surrey lady
I kept reading your post and thought Tortoise was and odd fist name Lola middle name IYKWIM

Wilkiepedia · 18/06/2008 19:34

PMSL - I too thought Surrey had called her baby: Tortoise Lola

surreylady · 18/06/2008 19:45

oooops - off to practice my punctuation - in my defence it has been a while since I was in education.....lovely tortoise though Lola!

mamamamama · 18/06/2008 19:48

Dolores is Lolita's full name but I don't think many people would know that (unless they had read the book of course).

I don't really know what the big deal is about Lolita anyway - people haven't stopped using the name Joseph because of Stalin or Emma because of Bovary.

Sorry, I've got a cob on tonight.

Dottoressa · 18/06/2008 19:51

Me too re Tortoise Lola!!!
(Well, some people do go in for unusual names...)

Dottoressa · 18/06/2008 19:52

After I read Lolita (aged 15), I planned to call my as-then-non-existent DD Lolita. Probably just as well I changed my mind meanwhile!

there are also lots of Lolas here in west london turniphead....................

LuLuBai · 18/06/2008 20:32

And a smattering of them here in the furthest reaches of SW London too - it had been my chosen abbreviation for my DDs name but now I just don't abbreviate it. Too common. And what with all the Leilas, Lilys and Lylas you could never be sure of getting your own kid back if you yelled it in Sainsburys.

zephyrcat · 18/06/2008 20:34

My youngest dd is Lola and I love it. I wasn't sure at first but everyone said it was a lovely name and so it ended up being her name.

I'm now going to run away before I say something horrible back to some of the comments abouti t!!!

LuLuBai · 18/06/2008 20:40

I love it too - I just got a bit exasperated by it's sudden surge in popularity after I had gone to the effort of finding her a first name which is as rare as hens teeth in this country AND can be abbreviated to Lola (which was a requirement for her name).

Boco · 18/06/2008 20:48

I have a Lola. I love it. I'm not a prostitute or a hippy, I have read Lolita but don't asssociate the name Lola with Lolita and don't see it as a remotely sexual name obviously. My mother like lots of you said it sounded like a lap dancing transexual. Pah.

She's six so came before the Charlie and Lola books and we didn't know any others at the time, now they're popping up now.

Sparkletastic · 18/06/2008 20:53

I have a Lola and I love it too

And mine is named after a fab jazz song (fave of my dear pa's) called 'Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets'!!

amandine07 · 14/07/2008 11:33

I love love Lola, such a cute name...I guess it probably is quite popular now which can put people off. Still, it's a lovely name I reckon!

AlexHanjon · 14/07/2008 16:13

I think Lola is a beautiful name. It's "exotic" but not "sexual" as others may think. It's also not "boring" and certainly "attractive."

hw2004 · 15/07/2008 21:06

Not keen i have to say. Too 'of the moment' tbh and think it will go out of fashion as quick!

minouminou · 16/07/2008 14:56

i've got that bloody saccharine-sweet charlie and lola theme running through my head now
nah, bin it....other posters are right - too "of the moment"

MrsMattie · 16/07/2008 17:09

I think it's gorgeous.
