My sister in law is thinking of Lola if she has a girl.
Does anybody like it?

OK, I stand corrected. Was just going from my babynames book . The wikipedia entry for Lola is informative.

benandoli · 17/06/2008 12:30

not very nice - sorry

lilyloo · 17/06/2008 12:30

my dd is Lily and we often call her Lola

branflake81 · 17/06/2008 12:42

reminds me of the Kinks. Also not a great name for a grown woman.

Nancy66 · 17/06/2008 12:43

I think it's a great name - cute for a little girl and sophisticated for an older woman.

Blocky · 17/06/2008 14:10

I love it! It is the name of my friends much longed for and awaited little girl - and it suits her to a t. Well it will if she is anyway as fiesty as her mum!

missyhissey · 17/06/2008 14:17

I absolutely love this name. Really wanted to call dd it and had pretty much persuaded dp to agree.

Then he came home one day, having mentioned it to several people, and said no way can we call her Lola, everyone associates it with a transvestite or a prostitute!

So that was that. I was gutted, and still slightly regret not ignoring the comments.

bikerunski · 17/06/2008 18:06

Lola as a "nightclub hostesses" is also star of Barry Manilow's Copacabana "Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl..."

greenelizabeth · 17/06/2008 18:16

Too sexual and insubstantial and too trendy too.

I like Lois though.

IF you must, what about Finola? or Paloma or Eloise? with nn Lola

DarthVader · 17/06/2008 18:18

Try Lila

treacletart · 17/06/2008 18:26

If you want an alternative howabout Paloma?

PInkyminkyohnooo · 17/06/2008 18:31

It's a nice enough name, but I know at least 3 little girls born in the last year with the name, I think it's becoming a name for the self-consciously 'cool' which put me off. My DD is called Lula as a shortening of her actual name.

pointydog · 17/06/2008 18:32

I like it. The whole charlie and lola thing has taken the shine off it but it was on my list for dd1 many years ago.

Pinkchampagne · 17/06/2008 18:36

I think of Charlie & Lola whenever I hear it.

findtheriver · 17/06/2008 19:15

two problems ... the transvestite association, .... and I believe the meaning is 'sorrowful' which doesnt do much for me!

CrushWithEyeliner · 17/06/2008 19:17

disgraceful name and it also makes the parents seem totally unliterary

Dottoressa · 17/06/2008 19:21

Humbert Humbert calls Lolita Lola (among other things).

Is Lola a class thing? There are lots at DD's local ballet, but none at DS's prep school (they're all Sophias and Camillas...)

pointydog · 17/06/2008 19:24

People are obsessed with Lolita. It's very unhealthy

CrushWithEyeliner · 17/06/2008 19:30

I honestly think anyone who has read Lolita would never name their little girl Lola, and those who have and do are very weird setting their daughter up for that kind of connotation.

Nancy66 · 17/06/2008 23:25

What a ridiculous thing to say - it's like saying you shouldn't call a child Rose because of Rose West.

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 17/06/2008 23:45

Lots of Lolas around here too. For me, the strongest associations are with the Kinks and Barry Manilow - Charlie and Lola are new on the scene! Just remembered too that Ute Lemper sings a song about 'they call me naughty Lola'.

greenelizabeth · 18/06/2008 10:37

nANCY, good point and I agree, but Maxine and Myra are notting cropping up on anybody's lists!!

Nancy66 · 18/06/2008 10:52

It's to do with association I suppose.

At the moment Madeline makes everyone think of Madeline McCann, Myra will always conjure up pictures of Myra Hindley and I think Maxine is just a horrible name anyhow!

Peter Sutcliffe hasn't stopped anyone thinking about the name neither have Fred or Rosemary West. it's funny how some stick and some don't.

Lola makes me think of the Kinks song and Madonna's daughter - Lolita never entered my head.

Blocky · 18/06/2008 14:39

crushwitheyeliner - whats with the negativity? I have read Lolita - wouldn't stop me personally naming a girl Lola - it's the personal preference of the parents surely? Does not make the parents 'weird' - that weirdness, in my opinion, is in the people who choose to associate that name with a certain connotation. I think it's a bit unfair to label all parents 'unliterary' for choosing a 'disgraceful' name

There are plenty of boys called Jack - you don't get people saying 'Shit! that name reminds me of Jack the Ripper!'

Loosen your corsets and chill out a bit.

wabbit · 18/06/2008 14:53

Lola is the second half of dd's first name (and we have surname begining with an L!!! )

I love it, I alway's assumed she would drop the first part of her name and call herself Lola when she reached her teens (first name all together sounds a bit cutesy and not grown-up)
