Thoughts on Emily Rose? Is it too sweet and unsubstantial?

I think it’s pretty but I think it was very common combination about 20 odd years ago when Emily was popular so I’d imagine many would be concentrated in the 20-30 age range. I know there’s alot of discourse on here about the middle name rose being a filler and boring, I have no family connection to it and I am one of them people who would be choosing it just for how it sounds.
I know middle names aren’t used anyway so I may be overthinking but the full name is important imo.
I would appreciate your thoughts and any other suggestions would be appreciated

This exact combination is forever being debated on here. People go on about the horror film. I sometimes think it gets suggested to spark another round of this ...

The name itself is rather nice imo and I've never seen the movie. It isn't awe-inspiringly original but far better that than yoonique.

Shinyandnew1 · 02/03/2026 08:40

I’ve taught loads of girls called Emily Rose (both hyphenated and as a middle name) recently.

Congratulations!

For me it’s a little too common, I like more unusual names. If you really love it though, you should use it.

id personally go for a twist like Emily Rosalind / Emily Rosamund/ Emily Rosalie.

I disagree. I think Emily Rose is pretty & those other names are dated & clunky.

NamingNoNames · 02/03/2026 09:25

@Runnersandtoms , because pretty much every other Emily born since about 1990 will be Emily Rose.
If your surname is fairly ordinary, there will almost certainly be other Emily Rose Surname.
We had duplicated names at school - something like 2 Emma Louise Smiths in one year.

Runnersandtoms · 02/03/2026 08:09

😁 also Emilia will be misspelled as Amelia.
Emily is much nicer imo.

The reason Emily Rose is frequently used is because it's a pretty sounding name. Not really sure why it's so important to people to have an unusual name.

It’s a pain to share a name with others. Lots of confusion and potential identity fraud.

Unless your surname is rare, and would strongly avoid such a common name combination!

Parrlorwarrior · 02/03/2026 10:42

Those are gorgeous names. ❤️

BarnacleBeasley · 02/03/2026 10:44

I like Emily and I think it makes sense and sounds much better to have a one-syllable middle name with a three-syllable first name (i.e. I do not think it's an improvement to replace Rose with Rosalind). However, I do agree about avoiding a common combination if you also have a reasonably common surname.

Fivelegged · 02/03/2026 10:48

Very magnolia paint, plus a horror film about a student who dies from a failed exorcism?

user2848502016 · 02/03/2026 10:51

I think it’s beautiful, yes it has been quite common for a few years but I guess that’s because it’s a pretty name, it wouldn’t put me off using it. There’s definitely an advantage to having a name everyone knows how to pronounce and spell!

NamingNoNames · 02/03/2026 11:57

The reason Emily Rose is frequently used is because it's a pretty sounding name.
But it's like the Sarah Jane of the 1960s or the Emma Louise of the 1980s. It stops being pretty when it's overused.

Not really sure why it's so important to people to have an unusual name.
Because a generic name doesn't stand out.
I know families where the DD and DDIL are both Sarah.
Because having you might be one of two Emily Roses in the same friendship group.
Because you might find it causes administrative problems like you getting mixed up with a namesake colleague.
Because your name is your brand.

A danger with popular names is that they become cliché and people start to consider them dated and a bit naff.

I don’t think Emily Rose is naff per se but I do think it makes it clear the person was born in late 90s/2000s.
I do find it slightly less sturdy or old school compared to something more substantial like Emily Elizabeth or Emily Jane etc emily rose was seems like what people picked if they wanted to make the popular Emily abit more trendy.

It’s still nice tho coz the names are classic but it will probably date

NamingNoNames · 02/03/2026 15:05

Elizabeth and Jane are filler middle names too.

WatchingWong · 02/03/2026 15:06

Conjures up images of exorcisms to me, but taking that out of the equation, it's perfectly nice, if not a bit common, where I am.

Edit: This being Mumsent, I should clarify I mean common as in popularly used and not common in the snobby sense.

It is a lovely name, though common.

Use Emily Rose if you like it.

Would you like ..

Its lovely

It’s a very pretty name. A close friend of mine has it. Just one reference in case it bothers you - there is a horror film called The Exorcism of Emily Rose…

I thought I recognised the name!

ByChicGuide · 02/03/2026 15:08

They are but they have always been solid. Rose was used in a trendy way a lot of the time 20 years ago and still is hence why it seems to always be used with chavvy hyphen names in uk.

BigFishLittleFishCardboardBoxes · 02/03/2026 15:43

It’s just boring. Every other Emily will
be an Emily Rose. There’s nothing stand out about it. It’s the same as Sarah Louise or Sarah Jane in the 80s.

LeftBoobGoneRogue · 02/03/2026 15:46

Riverflow6 · 02/03/2026 05:34

I like Emily.

Rose as a middle name is done to absolute death. Like the Louise of the 90s

And Louise as a middle name of the 60s, 70s and 80s too.

moonshinepoursthroughmywindow · 02/03/2026 18:18

There was an Emily Rose in my family tree, born about 1900. I rather like it, because although both names are popular, they are also traditional.

Elisirdamour · 02/03/2026 20:21

It’s nice but boring. How about Emily Rosina?

Spirallingdownwards · 02/03/2026 20:22

Whilst a pretty name my immediate thought went to the horror movie too.

Sidebeforeself · 02/03/2026 20:23

When I was a kid I had a book of funny poems .. this was one I remember
“ Emily Rose
Sat on a pin
Emily Rose again”

🤣

Thegirlhasnamechanged · 02/03/2026 21:32

I know people are saying it’s very commonplace but I personally am an Emily Rose from the early 90s. Not sure if I live in the wrong region from the rest of you but I’ve only ever met two other people called Emily (one in my year group at school and the other at a toddler club with DD1) and neither of them was an Emily Rose.

Teenage goth me absolutely loved that there was a horror movie with my name in it… though if I remember rightly Rose was her surname not middle name.

OP, if you like it then go for it. There are much worse names that you can be called than Emily Rose.
