Would you let stumbling upon a handful of two decade old web pages where a name you love is described as “chavvy” put you off?

I am, it’s not a common name anymore, so if it ever was “chavvy” can that be forgotten?

What’s the name?

Westun · 24/02/2026 14:35

Fashion for names change so I wouldn’t let opinions that are 20 years old influence me. And to add… a variation of my son’s name is regularly slated on here, but I love it and it absolutely suits him.

I do, Im a huge over thinker and have read where it says along the lines of “if you give your child a “chavvy” name they will be doomed to be hated forever and will struggle to get a job based on their name alone”

Are you saying name is dated? We would need to know the name, people opinions often change, but don't always change to better.

CloakedInGucci · 24/02/2026 14:38

I think if you put any name into a search on MN you’ll find people who’ve criticised it for one reason or another.

Sorry I know people are probably dying to know but I don’t want to create another web page where it might get slated seeing as you can’t delete threads

Just go with a different name then.

elQuintoConyo · 24/02/2026 14:52

According to MN, my son has a name given mostly to pets*, so..... Who cares?

*Not Fido

Silverbirchleaf · 24/02/2026 14:53

Names like George and Harry were once considered really old fashioned.

Nancy had a negative connotation, Nancy -boy meaning effeminate, and George was Georgie-Porgie meaning fat. Both names are popular now.

Sabrina to me was the cool one in Charles Angels. Later it became a teenage witch.

What I’m trying to say is baby name fashions change over time. If you love it, use it.

TheTortiePuffinNeedsHerBreakfast · 24/02/2026 14:53

If it's a page on MN I wouldn't worry about it. People seem to tie themselves in knots coming up with criticisms and obscure associations.

People have some quite mad ideas about ‘pet names’ on here. I think I saw something recently that claimed Toby was a ‘dog name’. I mean, I think if you’re not going with Fluffy, Pongo or Fido, you’re probably fine.

i don’t think there’s a name that doesn’t get called a pet name by someone. I blame the people who give their dogs human names

It was once a popular name apparently Ruined by celebrity association years ago. Does anyone even care about celebrities that haven’t been relevant for decades?

No but similar I suppose

Mumsnet has always been obsessively anti J and K names for boys. Certainly in the 23yrs I’ve been here, I’ve seen it repeatedly. So if what you found was a MN discussion, I wouldn’t worry too much. None of my 3 have names you’d ever find on mugs or drink bottles and pens etc. Not sure anyone would label them, ‘chavvy’ but even if they did, I wouldn’t care, especially if the only reference to that was many years ago.

I'm not keen on J and K names other than the very safe classic ones but not because of MN.
James is very popular as a middle name.

Is the name Jayden @Manfredine?

My DC's names would probably be called boring on here. I don't care.
