Would you let stumbling upon a handful of two decade old web pages where a name you love is described as “chavvy” put you off?

Kylie?? That is a bit naff…

CathyBlowsBubbles · 24/02/2026 15:10

I’m not going to guess but are there negative connotations with the celebrity themselves such as Jordan above or is it more that it became ridiculously popular due to a popular celebrity such as Kylie? Because that would affect my decision, I think.

Popular 10+yrs ago due to a celebrity with no negative vibes would be fine. Associated with someone awful, such as names like Myra, not such good vibes.

Mumsnet has always been obsessively anti J and K names for boys.
I'm not keen on J and K names other than the very safe classic ones but not because of MN.
James is very popular as a middle name.

Is the name Jayden @Manfredine?

My DC's names would probably be called boring on here. I don't care.

Edited

One of my boys is James. He was almost Jonathan to be known as Jonny but DH’s grandfather died when I was pregnant so we swapped to give him his name. Hence why I remember all the J&K threads.

That’s not the J and K names people mean though. Jayden/Kayden/Kai/Jade/Jordan.

Whether it’s fair or not, those names do have certain connotations and people will judge. It’s horrible but let’s at least be honest.

James/Jack etc don’t.

ZanzibarIsland · 24/02/2026 15:29

I've got a 21 year old dd. When she was a young child I remember people being really negative about her name online. There was recently a thread about it and people were almost all really positive about it. So I wouldn't go by an old thread.

peacefulpeach · 24/02/2026 15:32

Samantha? Pamela?

Jordan?

That was my first thought!

MrsMitford3 · 24/02/2026 15:37

Jordan or Brittany ?

According to MN, my son has a name given mostly to pets*, so..... Who cares?

*Not Fido

Rover?!

JaneGrint · 24/02/2026 15:43

I wouldn’t get hung up about a baby name thread from 20 years ago.

Baby name trends and fashions change, how a name might have been seen 20 years ago is almost certainly not how it would be seen now.

As far as the celebrity thing goes - if it’s a celebrity who’s not been relevant for decades, so presumably not much of a celebrity these days, I don’t think I’d be that bothered unless the baby shared a surname with the celebrity in question!

Just that really?

There isn't a single name that is universally loved. Whatever you call your child someone will think it's naff/boring/try hard if you try to find a name no one has ever said a negative thing about you won't find one. And if you invent a name people will hate that so just go with a name you love.

WhatAreYouDoingSundayBaby · 24/02/2026 15:52

I am guessing you are the poster who has posted a couple of times about Jade (even though you say it's not).........honestly, if you really love it just go for it. I think it's a lovely name.

Shinyhappyapple · 24/02/2026 15:56

Manfredine · 24/02/2026 14:37

I do, Im a huge over thinker and have read where it says along the lines of “if you give your child a “chavvy” name they will be doomed to be hated forever and will struggle to get a job based on their name alone”

Personally I think the ‘won’t get a job based on their name’ is a lot of bollocks and says more about the person posting this than society in general. It may also, to a certain extent, depend on your or background and where the child is likely to grow up.

Michael so 'chavy' they listed it twice?

ThisThreadCouldOutMe · 24/02/2026 16:05

People on here are weird about names tbh. I'm thinking of the threads with comments such as "you can't call your DC x. What if they want to be a dr?" I don't know my Dr's first name. Any of them, I rarely see the same one twice. They are all Dr Surname.

And according to MN Jamie isn't a real name. Neither is Edie. Maybe they originated as short versions of James and Edith. But the fact I have relatives with Jamie and Edie on their BCs means they are real names these days. And in Jamie's case has been for 40+ years.

That is a weird comment, agree doctors always go by their last names.

I know a dr called Kaylea, spelt like that. She's a very good gp, and lovely with it.

If you like the name, use it - sod anyone's 20 year old opinion

@ThisThreadCouldOutMe I think the doctor comments relate to actually becoming a doctor and getting a job in the first place, not to what the patients think. It's more of an issue of professional snobbery. For example, battling to make it in a male-led specialty like orthopaedics might be less of a challenge if your name is Julia rather than if it's Princess Fifi Rainbow. In an ideal world no one would ever pre-judge. But in reality, they do.

Zennia · 24/02/2026 17:50

No. I really don't care what other people think of my favourite names (within reason - I'm not about to choose Osama or another name that has negative connotations).

Plus, people's opinions are always changing. Not too long ago, Isabella, Sophia and Amelia were considered "old lady" names and were rarely given to babies. Not anymore.

How are Michael, Tom, Luke and Sarah Chavvy? I dont think I would think anything of amy of the names on that list. I would think chavvy is more the Kai/ Jayden/Kayden and girls names with 'Yooneeq' spellings.

I think ridiculous names like princess fifi rainbow are a different category to chavvy names. I’m talking perfectly normal name that has been described as “chavvy” but years ago. Could it be that some names described as chavvy twenty years ago are now not associated to chavs because recent chav name threads focus on double barreled stuff and Jayden/kayfen/ brayden etc

Danielle, Shannon, Jordan etc. does anyone even give a shit these days?
