Fanny for a girl?

Hi everyone,

I’m expecting a baby girl. My husband is French and is insistent that he wants to name our daughter after his aunt who raised him - Fanny! It’s a common French name, but the baby will be born and raised in the UK.

Am I unreasonable to say no and to worry that she would be bullied or made fun of? My husband thinks I’m overreacting and that the slang word is barely used nowadays and that not many people know of it.

I will be showing him this thread with the different responses.

Thank you

Just No!

You absolutely cannot call your child Fanny if they’re going to live in the uk.

Pancakeflipper · 21/02/2026 17:00

Inspired from watching Fanny do her fabulous ski-ing on the Winter Olympics?

dontforgetme · 21/02/2026 17:00

Definitely not!! Kids are mean and teenage girls can be super bitchy. I wouldn’t even use it as a middle name op.

Tooearlyfortea · 21/02/2026 17:00

No, please don’t!!!!

Martymcfly24 · 21/02/2026 17:01

Oh you can't call your little girl that..she will definitely suffer because of it. That's cruel.

Simplestars · 21/02/2026 17:01

Just No. Not fair on child.

Sirzy · 21/02/2026 17:01

No!

can you do Francesca or Francis type instead?

MiddleAgedDread · 21/02/2026 17:01

No
no
and no again

YouDriveMeCrazyButICanDoThatMyself · 21/02/2026 17:01

Stand firm op.
Congratulations, wishing you a safe and speedy delivery. 🎀

(edited but apologise, I know it’s sensitive for some people, even though it’s personal experience)

Fridgedooropen · 21/02/2026 17:01

Nope. Frances. Insist on it.

peacefulpeach · 21/02/2026 17:01

Stop it.

Just no. Obviously no.

A girl I knew was called Candida. Bad enough.

2old4thispoo · 21/02/2026 17:01

Poor kid...

Snorlaxo · 21/02/2026 17:01

I wouldn’t. Fran is fine.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 21/02/2026 17:01

No.

Feelingsadtodayagain · 21/02/2026 17:02

You absolutely can’t call your daughter Fanny. Poor child!!!

RaininSummer · 21/02/2026 17:02

Definitely not. There is a reason the Fanny in Enid Blyton books was renamed

dailyconniptions · 21/02/2026 17:03

Come on, you know it's a ridiculous idea. You CANNOT name her that. It's in frequent use and has a single, very clear meaning. Plus it's extremely unattractive as a girl's name.

BashfulClam · 21/02/2026 17:03

Oh good no, in Scotland that really means ‘Cunt’! You can’t call a child that!

EmmasDilemmas · 21/02/2026 17:03

Another very strong no! But if very important to him, can you choose a related name (Frances, Francesca, Fantine) or aunt’s middle name? Only if you also like those names of course.

EmpressaurusKitty · 21/02/2026 17:03

Absolutely not. Plus it also means bum in the US, doesn’t it?

Dillydollydingdong · 21/02/2026 17:03

No! No! No! That's child cruelty! Poor little girl! 😭

ForAzureSeal · 21/02/2026 17:03

Absolutely not. I actually think it's a a lovely name but you just cannot separate it from various slang uses that are not flattering to a little girl. It can variously mean: female genitalia in UK as a whole; a silly person in parts of UK; a bottom in US English.

123456abcdef · 21/02/2026 17:03

Absolutely not.

NuffSaidSam · 21/02/2026 17:03

No, it's a very common slang word for vagina.

You mustn't call a baby Vagina no matter who raised you. Maybe Aunt Fanny has a middle name?
