Fanny for a girl?

Hi everyone,

I’m expecting a baby girl. My husband is French and is insistent that he wants to name our daughter after his aunt who raised him - Fanny! It’s a common French name, but the baby will be born and raised in the UK.

Am I unreasonable to say no and to worry that she would be bullied or made fun of? My husband thinks I’m overreacting and that the slang word is barely used nowadays and that not many people know of it.

I will be showing him this thread with the different responses.

Thank you

This is brilliant!!

🤣🤣🤣there is not enough irn bru to get you through that!!

thank god DH has seen sense!!

Louise seems very dated to me, there are some lovely French names, couldn't he be persuaded?

but if he's stuck on naming her after his Aunt, then Louise it is! But he does need to realise she's your daughter too & a person in her own right. It's nice to honour his Aunt, but it's more important his daughter has a name you both love and hopefully she does too.

On my university course the international student Fanny had one of the lads ask her of she knew what Fanny meant in the UK in our first seminar (she said yes she was aware). Can't be a pleasant interaction to have repeatedly.

You might want to hide the thread if it's served its purpose for you, @LemonZebras. Hardly anyone is going to see your update.

If anyone is reading, DH backed down and they are going to call her Louise.

scottishgirl69 · 21/02/2026 17:35

Francine or Francecsa

ThisHazelPombear · 21/02/2026 17:35

If you want your daughter together shit kicked out of Her at school and go no contact with you as soon as she can then name her Fanny.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 21/02/2026 17:35

Louise is lovely.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 21/02/2026 17:36

Would he call his daughter "Con" if you lived in France?

It's weird that Willies and Dicks fine, but Fanny is seen as such a big issue here.

Those names aren't fine either.

Frances nn Frankie. Or something else entirely.

Non! My mum liked Fanny for me, and luckily my dad talked her out of it. Got teased enough for this one. S’il vous plaît monsieur, ne le faisez pas!

Phonicshaskilledmeoff · 21/02/2026 17:37

There was a girl called Virginia at our school - you ca imagine what she got god bless her. Don’t do it

StormyLandCloud · 21/02/2026 17:37

Glad you’ve reconsidered.
other names could be Stephanie, Tiffany … but Louise is nice, uncommon these days, usually a middle bar for people of a certain age (me lol 50’s)

Dutchhouse14 · 21/02/2026 17:37

No, it would make her teenage years hell

Do many people call their kid "Dick" these days?

FeministThrowingAPrincessParty · 21/02/2026 17:38

No, choose another name

YellowTexasRose · 21/02/2026 17:38

There is a contestant in the Winter Olympics called Fanny . I think she is Swiss.

NamingNoNames · 21/02/2026 17:39

@ZoyaTheDestroyer , they won't take the mick in front of a teacher, and they might not if the name is that of a kid from an ethnic minority. They will otherwise.

I remember a Tiffany getting called Tiff-Fanny but young Mr Butt (British-Pakistani) was left alone.

JuliettaCaeser · 21/02/2026 17:41

Just drop the F - Annie is a lovely name:

Marieb19 · 21/02/2026 17:41

Absolutely no. Unless you want to torture your daughter.

godmum56 · 21/02/2026 17:42

I don'r normally comment on these threads but absolutely not. What is your husband thinking?

NamingNoNames · 21/02/2026 17:42

scottishgirl69 · 21/02/2026 17:35

Francine or Francecsa

or Frances (if she can cope with getting Francis a lot) or Françoise (cedilla will get missed a lot)

Rightsraptor · 21/02/2026 17:44

No no no no no.

The child's father is French: it's obvious his English is not as good as he thinks it is. His poor little daughter will be mocked for ever.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 21/02/2026 17:44

Have you considered the more formal 'Front bottom'?

PrestonHood121 · 21/02/2026 17:45

No.

Electricsausages · 21/02/2026 17:45

No No No

NamingNoNames · 21/02/2026 17:45

I used to work with a Yoni
