To want to choose a name without DP’s input? (not actually!)

Older 2 are called Jack & Leo

I was convinced I was having a girl this time (not that we had a name picked either way!). But I feel like I have used the boys names I love. I named eldest on my own which was much easier than with someone else, DS2 was easy too as DS1 had input, saying he wanted to call him “lion” so Leo fit and it suited him so we went ahead and chose it. Baby #3 is much difficult.

Surname is Wilson, The only name we really like is Finn but DP doesn’t like finley/finlay and Finn on its own doesn’t sound as good. We don’t want something too popular (which is ironic given the popularity of DS1’s name when he was born).

Before I settled on Jack for my eldest, I had chosen Adam but i’m not sure on it now for this baby and it didn’t seem to suit him anyway so I don’t know if I would feel the same for this baby (and DP isn’t really a fan, he said it would sound weird on a newborn). Hes shot down most other names too when googling

Please help!

Don't name a baby without dp input. It would help us more if you tell us why does he disagree
other suggestions
are you naming boys or girls?

LoungingontheSopha · 19/01/2026 18:07

You both like Finn. Call him Finn.

fruitbrewhaha · 19/01/2026 18:07

Of course he should have an input.

Choose a long list of names and then ask him to choose one from the list?

AprilinPortugal · 19/01/2026 18:12

Jack, Leo and Finn sounds great! 😄

We’re having another boy. Hes not given particular reasons as to why, when I first found out we were having a boy, we scrolled through a list of about 1000 names and he said “maybe” to a handful of them but now hes not agreeing to any. He doesn’t want to use names beginning with a J or an L, which rules out a lot of names.

Finn feels kind of… incomplete? and I’m unsure whether people will call him Finley anyway as there’s been cases with various children I know where they’ve been called the longer version of their names even though they only have the shortened version on their BC

Finn is much better than Finley/Finlay. Fintan and Finnian are good.

MOntueslite · 19/01/2026 18:25

I love finian

CoffeeBeansGalore · 19/01/2026 18:26

Your boys have quite traditional names so:-

blueskies23 · 19/01/2026 18:32

Fionn

RegalDiamondMonster · 19/01/2026 18:34

Finn and Finley/Findlay are different names entirely. Finn is not a shortening of Finley (Fin with one 'n' is the shortening). I think Finn sounds more 'classic' than Finley although both are nice names.

Other long versions could be Finian, Finnan, Fintan, Phineas, Finbar.

Sometimessmiling · 19/01/2026 18:38

Fergus Fergal Jamie

chunkyBoo · 19/01/2026 19:05

Fintan

Thank you for the suggestions, I didn’t realise Finn was a name in its own right. I thought people would associate it with Finley. i’ve mentioned the other suggestions instead of Finley to DP and hes shot them all down.

DS2’s middle name is James, both boys have a slightly longer middle name than first (DS1’s is Anthony, which is a family name).

We still have until April to decide but i wanted to be prepared this time especially as DS2 was 6 weeks early

Finn is cool but Finley seems a bit wet. Jack, Leo and Finn are great.
Finn is from Fionn.

Newsenmum · 19/01/2026 19:12

I know a Finn. Much prefer it to Finley!

DisappearingGirl · 19/01/2026 19:16

Mmm I had this problem a bit. Probably need to remind DP he has two options:

Go with one of your suggestions
or
Think of some names himself

Tumbler777 · 19/01/2026 19:19

There is a little boy in our family called Finnlay (i think) point is, there are 14 different spellings so be aware of this if you're going to be bothered by it.

BeaLola · 19/01/2026 19:22

Like a lot of others I think Finn works well with your surname and your older 2 boys

CheddarCheeseAndCrispSandwich · 19/01/2026 19:28

How about Flynn? Similar to Finn, but more ‘complete’ sounding.

Jack and Leo were once nick names for John and Leonard.
So calling your son Finn is very similar.

Jack. Leo and Finn sound good together.

Other ideas ,..
Flynn
Fergus
Alan
Ned
Clive
Ross
Bruce

Finn is really lovely, and is great with Jack and Leo. Yes, it's a name in its own right and much nicer, I think, than Finley/Finlay.

If I'd had a fourth child and it was another boy (I have three sons) I'd have wanted to call him Finn.

As it is, we stuck at three and I ended up using Finn on our next dog. Not that it's a dogs' name, I don't think that at all, it's just a reflection on how much I like it and wanted to use it.

Eenameenadeeka · 20/01/2026 02:29

Agree with others, Finn is lovely and goes so well with your other boys names.
