To want to choose a name without DP’s input? (not actually!)

Older 2 are called Jack & Leo

I was convinced I was having a girl this time (not that we had a name picked either way!). But I feel like I have used the boys names I love. I named eldest on my own which was much easier than with someone else, DS2 was easy too as DS1 had input, saying he wanted to call him “lion” so Leo fit and it suited him so we went ahead and chose it. Baby #3 is much difficult.

Surname is Wilson, The only name we really like is Finn but DP doesn’t like finley/finlay and Finn on its own doesn’t sound as good. We don’t want something too popular (which is ironic given the popularity of DS1’s name when he was born).

Before I settled on Jack for my eldest, I had chosen Adam but i’m not sure on it now for this baby and it didn’t seem to suit him anyway so I don’t know if I would feel the same for this baby (and DP isn’t really a fan, he said it would sound weird on a newborn). Hes shot down most other names too when googling

Please help!

I love Finn and prefer it to longer versions. It sounds complete to me. You have a name you both like!

Beyondbeliefsometimes · 20/01/2026 04:24

Finn is most definitely a name in its own right. Finn MacCool, the Irish giant who created the giants causeway fighting with the Scottish giant Benandooner. I also prefer it to Finley/Finlay

Myswweetchild · 20/01/2026 04:49

I think you should go with Finn.
Though I do like a pp's suggestion of Flynn !
Seth is great, too.

GrifFINN?

roshi42 · 20/01/2026 18:29

I much prefer Finn to Finley/Finlay. Jack, Leo and Finn all go well - short, easy, cool, and equally popular right now.

MaraScottie · 20/01/2026 18:30

Fionn?

Scarlettpixie · 20/01/2026 19:06

I also know a Finn and think it sounds great with your other two.

August1980 · 20/01/2026 20:27

I know a Finn and. Finley - both belong to very cute boys OP:) as yours will be

ThistleTits · 20/01/2026 21:35

@Execom Finbar, Irish name. More unusual than Finley but can be shortened to Finn.

Moo31 · 20/01/2026 22:00

I have a Finn who is 8. It means fair haired warrior. I think it's a strong name. I still love his name. I also have a Max. Other names on our list were Jack (!), Ben, Ryan, Seth, Joe and Tom.

Dontpokethebearnow · 20/01/2026 22:41

If you both like Finn, put it at the top of the list.
Although I really love Griffin, with Finn being the short version of the name anyway.

Harvey? Means 'warrior' will fit with lion? 🤔
PS I love it, we named our son Harvey!

Finn is definitely a name in it's own right and I wouldn't assume it's short for Finley (which I'm not keen on). There is also Fintan and Finnian as potentially longer options but I much prefer Finn and think it goes perfectly with Jack and Leo.

Agapornis · 21/01/2026 09:56

I know a Finnegan that goes by Finn.

How about another Leonardo DiCaprio related name (Titanic's Jack..) - Howard? 😉

wherethewildthingsare · 21/01/2026 16:58

Finn is a great name, mine is 20! It’s a completely different name origin than Finley/Finlay. Would have gone with Fionn but it would have been confused in Wales with the girls name Ffion. No issues with it at all. My other boys also have one syllable names. His middle name has four and is a “classic” name.

MellersSmellers · 21/01/2026 20:41

My nephew is a Finn, and has never to my knowledge been called Finley.
However, I've always thought Finn is a bit...well, blunt! I think I prefer 2 syllable names that can be shortened if you or they like

Moreteaandchocolate · 22/01/2026 05:58

Finn is great! The other name that comes to mind to go with Jack and Leo, is Max - love that too.

MusicMakesItAllBetter · 22/01/2026 11:19

Why not wait until baby is here and see if something comes up when you gaze into his beautiful face? He doesn't have to have a name already....

DPotter · 22/01/2026 11:29

Don't get hung up and absolutly must have a name ready before your baby is born. It's fine to wait until he has arrived.

I couldn't get any sense out of DP when expecting DD - but we decided on a name within an hour of her being born. A name neither of us had thought of before but it suited her completely.

BTW - I like Finn - think it works well with your surname. And if you follow the pattern of longer middle name, there'll be a good balance too. How about Finn Alexander Wilson ?
