Thoughts on Jessamy (Jess-a-me). It's 17th Century variation on Jasmine and Jessamine.

That’s the one I was thinking of & I seem to remember he loathed his name.

He and Frederica had an agreement to never call each other Jessie and Freddy, as I remember. The owner of Lufra, the Baluchistan Hound.

Giggorata · 12/01/2026 16:53

I love it.

Makes me think of Jessamy seeds. Or "Open Jessame!"

It isn't awful though. I wouldn't personally use it as it does have a yoonique vibe.

The other kids will sing "can you tell me how to get, how to get to Jessamy Street" at her.

dailyconniptions · 12/01/2026 16:58

I really like it actually. Please don't do Rose or Grace as a middle name though.

Libre2 · 12/01/2026 17:00

I absolutely love it. I also love Jessian which I have only heard once, on a man that I met briefly through work years ago - never heard before or since and I only met the guy twice but I still remember loving his name!

AgnesMcDoo · 12/01/2026 17:00

Awful sorry.

go with Jessica or Jasmine

Vodkamartini3olives · 12/01/2026 17:04

I like it but I'm not sure I'd use it. I think you / your kid would be constantly asked how do you pronounce that?. I would go with Yasmin or Jasmine.
@SalmonOnFinnCrisp Not made up or American.

LighthouseLED · 12/01/2026 17:06

Why are so many people apparently allergic to names like Carol, Susan, Mary, Heather, Rose, or any of the dozens if not hundreds of available names that 100% of native English speakers know how to pronounce and spell?

Because that would cause different issues if everyone had the same (very few) names, even ignoring personal taste.

Even one of the names you’ve suggested you’d need to spell out - is it Carol or Carole?

ginasevern · 12/01/2026 17:13

I'm aware of the name and it is indeed a very old one. However, most people will assume it's a made up American thing. I much prefer Jessamine which is prettier and still very unusual.

user1492757084 · 12/01/2026 17:56

Not a personal favourite, though I have heard of a Jessamy in my friend's class in the 1980s.

I prefer Jessica, Jamima, Jasmine, Jezabel and Jacinta.

Moreteaandchocolate · 12/01/2026 18:00

I’m not keen - it makes me think of Jeremy.

Sounds like a name the Duggar family would use.

😅😅😅

laserme · 12/01/2026 18:32

Awful

Celynfour · 12/01/2026 18:55

I also love it and knew a lovely person with the name . She was usually called Jess or Jesse .

LilyLemonade · 12/01/2026 19:30

It's lovely, very pretty, and I've been aware of it as a name for a long time though I haven't met any.

Wildbushlady · 12/01/2026 19:32

It sounds like you couldn't decide between jessica or jeremy and created some trashy mash up.

LegoLandslide · 12/01/2026 19:36

I like it. I used to know one (she was v posh).

Also there's the Jean Ure character from Star Turn - who has very annoyingly been renamed Maddy in the dumbed-down rewrite

JillyGiraffe · 12/01/2026 19:38

My first thought when I saw Jessamy was that the hyphen was missing between Jess and Amy, but now I can’t unthink the comment about ‘jizz’.

Why not Jasmine? It’s beautiful. Much prettier sounding than Jessamy.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 12/01/2026 19:42

Nope

user2848502016 · 12/01/2026 19:44

I quite like it actually, and I like Jess for short

Cat1504 · 12/01/2026 19:45

Don’t do it…it’s a really bad name

QuietLifeNoDrama · 12/01/2026 19:47

It’s a no from me and reminding me of the Jimberly thread. Sorry

It's a longstanding name. Perhaps you don't read much?

"Carol, no E" and "Carole, with an E" are still worlds better than having to spell your entire first name.

There are more easy-to-spell names available than the ones I listed. As for the "loads of people with the same name" problem, there were four with the sane name in my class at school and we coped. Davids and Johns everywhere cope.

Unstoppered · 12/01/2026 19:56

It’s my mum’s name. She often goes by a shortening but I’m not aware of her ever having trouble with people not knowing how to pronounce it. I’ve always thought it was beautiful and suits her perfectly. I’m confident that everyone on MN would hate the names I gave to my own children!
