For a boy. Suggestions in a similar vein (whatever that vein may be, as I’m not sure there’s a common thread) are very welcome.

Tolkienesque isn't necessarily a criticism op. Tolkien did look to old names from legend, particularly Norse legend, a lot so names like Torin and Magnus do have that kind of vibe.

Edited

She led with saying they weren’t ‘normal human names’ and followed up by calling them ‘names people give pets’. So, I’m pretty sure she was being critical.

This is someone that genuinely thinks that ‘Ciaran’ is an outlandish non-human name.

Magnus is great.

Lachlan
Petroc
Hampshire
Anders

Is Ciaran a dogs name now then?

Apparently so.

It’s fortunate I didn’t suggest any less common Irish names or anything involving a fada or her head would have exploded. 🤣

Hamish not Hampshire!

I understood what you meant! 😁

I just thought of another you might like - 'Derryn?

Am I going way off track?

Ciaran is not unusual, and I don't know many pets called Ciaran. Beare sounds like, well... a bear I guess.

Thorin Oakenfield was a Tolkien character which will be why her mind went in that direction.

GoldOpenAccess · 31/12/2025 20:12

Lorcan?

I’ve read LoTR. And I know Ciaran is neither unusual nor a name generally reserved for pets - I’m not the one who is claiming either of those things.

As stated, she opened with ‘What about normal, human names?’ and then carried on. I genuinely don’t see how you can think she wasn’t being offensive, but you’re certainly entitled to your opinion.

I’ve never come across that before, but I think it’s lovely! Not off track at all. Thank you.

Too close to Darren

loislovesstewie · 31/12/2025 20:33

Ciaran. ( BTW, I always consider that to be the proper spelling)

Oneforallandallforone · 31/12/2025 20:36

Devon - there may be alternative spellings to this.
Dante.

Both fantastic names in my humble opinion.

I know many Ciarans and Kierans and can confirm it is indeed an actual name, not that there was any doubt. Its a well known and common name. Not my favourite personally.

TrentCrimmsflowinglocks · 31/12/2025 20:51

Torin is lovely.

katsnmouse · 31/12/2025 21:01

Ciaran is my favourite (using irish pronunciation Ciaràn and meaning).

However, from personal
experience, if you’re not in ireland definitely be prepared to have to spell it /correct pronunciation more times than not. Kieran is also a lovely name.

For what it’s worth, all of the names on the list are ‘normal’ depending on your world view. Narrow minded, roundabout painting flag wielders won’t understand.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 31/12/2025 21:05

I was going to say I really like Hampshire 😆

I can kinda see it working with a surname like Jones or Smith.

Anyhow, Magnus, Torin or Ciaran are all great, although if you do use Ciaran you have to decide fada or not.

Tully is an historic name for the Roman orator Cicero, in case that matters to you.

Verathe · 31/12/2025 21:14

Torin had my vote

ComewithmeIntotheseaofLove · 31/12/2025 22:14

I like out of suggested

lorcan
Anders

GreywackeJ · 31/12/2025 22:15

All nice except Beare which is wanky.

CoffeeSparkle · 31/12/2025 22:19

Love Torin

Not liking them is fine. Claiming (repeatedly, despite multiple comments to the contrary) that fairly standard names like Ciaran, Torin and Magnus are Tolkienesque, animal names or abnormal says a lot more about your very narrow world view than it does about the names.

Like I said, there are roundabouts waiting to be painted and hotels waiting to be shouted at before the year is out. Make haste!

Now now op, your comment is verging on being as narrow minded as the persons comment you’re replying to!
FWIW, I’d say Ciaran (and other spelling variations of this name such as Kieran, Cyren, Kieron, Kyrean) is very common, I’ve never heard of Torin and only know 1 Magnus - Magnus Magnusson who presented on TV years ago, so I wouldn’t class them as ‘standard’ names. As a teacher of 35 years, I must have come across 1000s of boys names!
The thing to consider is what their surname will be. Torin Bloggs doesn’t sound as good as Torin Harper for example.

MovedlikeHarlowinMonteCarlo · 31/12/2025 22:27

Ive no idea why someone who doesn't like your names should be painting roundabouts. Seems very weird.

Ciaran is nice but not Beare.

They didn’t just not like the names. If that was all they’d said, their comments would still be there.

Hampshire Jones would be a super cool detective in a vintage Jag, with a dark past. I can totally see it! 😁

I didn’t know that about Cicero, so thank you.
