For a boy. Suggestions in a similar vein (whatever that vein may be, as I’m not sure there’s a common thread) are very welcome.

Which of those isn’t a ‘normal human name’, pray tell?

Do you mean “English” names??

I think she does.

So, Ciaran, Torin and Magnus appear to be clear faves so far. Thank you!

No, i mean, normal names, and not names that Tolkien would have given his dwarves in Middle Earth.

My kids know multiple Torins and Magnuses, in Scotland they are very normal names. Tolkien was more influenced by Welsh names, I think!

I know a family with the surname Beare and they say it as 'beer'.

Magnus, Torin, Ciaran are OK.
Fergus, Angus, Cillian?

I also know a family with the surname Beare and they hate that pronunciation, always like Bear. So seems inadvisable to use that.

Iamsaved1995 · 31/12/2025 18:43

I love Magnus! I think its such a strong masculine name 😊 it also reminds me of magnum ice creams which are my absolute fave 😆 seriously though it's a great name. Love it

This is such a weird take. ‘Ah, those Irish and Scandinavians, and the pesky Scots, with their weird names. Not nice normal names, like proper humans.’

Please go away. Paint a roundabout or something.

Family name over here, as well. We pronounce it like the animal.

Love Torin. Big yuk to Beare.

SpringingOn · 31/12/2025 18:48

I like Torin but not the others.

Yup Middle Earth is what I'd describe the vibe as.

I liked the suggestion of Ludo.

MartinCrieffsHat · 31/12/2025 19:11

Ludovic or Casimir?

I don’t know about Beare but the others are very much human names.

ComewithmeIntotheseaofLove · 31/12/2025 19:23

Tully!

Tacocat2 · 31/12/2025 19:27

Magnus, Kieran, Cillian, Angus, Rupert, Tristan, Leander….

Not liking them is fine. Claiming (repeatedly, despite multiple comments to the contrary) that fairly standard names like Ciaran, Torin and Magnus are Tolkienesque, animal names or abnormal says a lot more about your very narrow world view than it does about the names.

Like I said, there are roundabouts waiting to be painted and hotels waiting to be shouted at before the year is out. Make haste!

I really really like Tadhg. Outside Ireland, I feel like he’d be spelling it and/or explaining how to pronounce it all the time, though.

I didn’t use the word ‘abnormal’. You just made that up.

I’m enjoying the not at all subtle implication that i’m a racist because i dislike your daft name choices.

Haven’t you just made all kinds of assumptions about me??

But, let’s not argue. Life’s too short.

Tolkienesque isn't necessarily a criticism op. Tolkien did look to old names from legend, particularly Norse legend, a lot so names like Torin and Magnus do have that kind of vibe.
