Which one would you choose out of the following:

  1. Aliki
  2. Kelly
  3. Kyveli
  4. Clelia
  5. Vicky

I know they sound probably a weird selection of names, but we are not British (although we are living in the UK) and we are trying to honour family relatives and to choose a name that works in both our origin country and the UK.

I get that these names could all be a second name and to call the child with another more mainstream name, but this is not an option.

If you could please rank them, it would help a lot :) Thanks

Clelia. Not a fan of any the rest sorry.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 08/12/2025 17:16

@Calliopespa, do you live somewhere where people say ah as eh? Of course they are pronounced differently, as are Kerry and Carrie, Allen and Ellen etc.

Don't think so? It was in London?

The child's mum was Greek so not sure if that makes a difference.

GoodVibesHere · 08/12/2025 17:20

Clelia sounds like part of the body, probably something in the female genital area.

Out of all of them I'd prob have to choose Kelly.

Calliopespa · 08/12/2025 17:21

I did notice the Dad called her Cal-LISS-ta (as would I) and the mum said more like Cal-LEES-ta.

Can't say more or they are going to start recognising themselves if they see this!

DuchessOfNarcissex · 08/12/2025 17:25

@Calliopespa, It might be your hearing.

RecordBreakers · 08/12/2025 17:25

Vicky is nice. People in the UK will probably assume it is short for Victoria

Kelly is a recognised name in the UK - quite 'of a time', so not very fashionable now, which might be a good thing, or a bad thing, depending on your own feelings.

The other 3 are not names I've come across (and I've spent decades working with many, many dc in a big, multi cultural City).
I do wonder if seeing Clecia written down, people's brains would see 'Celia with a typo, as we are used to Celia ?
The other two I would probably try to sound out phonetically to find the person then check with them how they say it and where they were from.

Why do you like being so rude?

DuchessOfNarcissex · 08/12/2025 17:28

@Calliopespa , It was a genuine suggestion. Why do you make weird posts?

I don't. It's you.

I just clicked on an old thread by mistake and there you were again... being abrasive to someone over nothing at all.

I have an Italian relative called Clelia so I'm used to seeing it,. It's OK although there are far prettier Italian names. Vicky is nice, especially if short for Victoria. The rest are just too out there really for my taste.

How is it pronounced?

tartyflette · 08/12/2025 17:37

I like Clelia, had a lovely colleague with this name, she was Turkish.
Didn't find it hard to pronounce at all. She said it was said pretty much as it reads, Clell-iah.

Peachee · 08/12/2025 17:41

Aliki - Too like alkali. A sister for Acid
Kelly - Brook, Osborne etc. A name from a recent but past era.
Kyveli - Norwegian protein yoghurt
Clelia - STD
Vicky - Pollard.

None for me, sorry.

This for me too..

ginasevern · 08/12/2025 18:05

LochKatrine · 08/12/2025 17:33

How is it pronounced?

It's pronounced just as you see it. With a hard "c" and the "e" as in elephant.

LevelHed · 08/12/2025 18:11

Sorry, I think they are all awful.

Thank you. It's a really lovely name!

Yes, it's certainly unusual. Even in Italy it isn't common place.

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 08/12/2025 19:18

I really like Aliki - it might get spelt Alecky a bit but never mind

Victoria nn Vicky is absolutely fine

Clelia is OK but is quite phlegmy to say for some UK accents, never mind with a lisp so I wouldn't

Kyveli is going to be a PITA for her as no one will know it and she will be spelling and correcting it for the rest of her life. It's alright though

Kelly is low rent and dated in a UK context so would be cruel

RegalDiamondMonster · 08/12/2025 23:05

I'd go for Kyveli or Aliki. They aren't known in the UK much so have no strong connotations, would signify a connection to your heritage and seem like they would sound nice.

Kelly is very dated to 70s/80s.
Clelia sounds like a clunky version of Celia, harder to say.
If you had a daughter called Victoria these days you'd probably go for Vic or Tori as the shortening- Vicky is also very 70s/80s.

ChubbyFecker · 08/12/2025 23:10

Aliki is beautiful...my favourite of your suggestions

Peternell · 09/12/2025 05:28

Aliki is my first choice. Do you pronounce it with emphasis on the first or second syllable? Kyveli also seems nice and is my second choice. Again, not sure how to pronounce.

I like Victoria, and Vicky is ok as a short form, though I much prefer Tori or Rori as short forms of Victoria.

Kelly is ok.

I dislike Clelia. It seems like a tongue-twister. Celia, on the other hand, is a good name.

MirandaBlu · 09/12/2025 08:49

I like Aliki a lot. It was on the short list for my niece (one British and one Greek parent) but she ended up being Ariadne instead. I like Kyveli, too, but if in an English-speaking country the pronunciation may be challenging (and unfortunately the usual anglicised version, Cybele, has a completely different pronunciation).

LochKatrine · 09/12/2025 08:50

Ariadne is a beautiful name.

Oaktree87 · 09/12/2025 09:43

Thank you all, really useful, although quite mixed responses.

Most of you said that Kelly and Vicky are dated.
Most of you said that Clelia is body part/mispelled Celia/tongue twister/medical.

So if we narrow them down to Aliki and Kyveli? I know they are not UK standard but not hard to learn.

Aliki is pronounced indeed as Ah-leaky

Kyveli is pronounced as Kiv-Ellie.

Thoughts on these two? Are they too extreme names for UK? They are both valid names in our origin country and they don't look weird with our surname.
