Welp okay thank you!

Both awful. How about Mulder or Scully?

TeenToTwenties · 04/12/2025 14:08

They both sound Australian to me.

Onefortheroad25 · 04/12/2025 14:09

Neither are for me but Lachlan is better than Sullivan.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 04/12/2025 14:10

Lachlan is nice.

BarnacleBeasley · 04/12/2025 14:16

I quite like Lachlan but I think it needs to have a soft 'ch' sound and don't like the shortening to 'Lockie' which has a hard k.

SirChenjins · 04/12/2025 14:18

Lachlan - providing you pronounce it properly!

MarvellousMonsters · 04/12/2025 14:19

My first thought when I hear Sully….

Lachlan or Sullivan
carkerpartridge · 04/12/2025 14:19

I was about to ask if you are Australian too! The only time I have heard Lachlan/Lockie is on Australian TV series so I guess it is popular there. I have heard neither name in UK.

Treylime · 04/12/2025 14:20

NuffSaidSam · 04/12/2025 14:21

I like Lachlan, but not Lockie.

Sullivan is ok, quite like Sully (although it does make me think of Monsters Inc). It does sound a bit like sullen though.

What about Solomon nn Solly? Or Sonny?

WintersintheWorld · 04/12/2025 14:23

Lachlan
I think it sounds more Scottish than Aussie.
"Try hard" is such a ridiculous concept when it comes to names and I say that as someone with very classically/boringly named children.

HonoriaBulstrode · 04/12/2025 14:25

Are you Scottish or Irish?

It is Scottish. There was a lot of Scottish migration to Australia, especially in the 19th century, so you do see lots of Scottish names there. There are quite a few names that, before living in Scotland, I'd only ever seen on Australian soaps and in DC Thomson comics like Bunty, which was published in Dundee, e.g. Ailsa, Morag. Where I live now they are normal names.

TalulahJP · 04/12/2025 14:27

Lochlan is Scottish. Shortened to lochy.
As in the Scottish pronunciation of loch wirh a y.
NOT lock (as in door lock) wirh a y.

Lachlan isn’t Scottish.

same here.

BarnacleBeasley · 04/12/2025 14:42

Lachlan isn’t Scottish.

It is - both spellings are possible though the popularity of Lachlan with an a in Australia is probably because of Lachlan Macquarie, a major Scottish colonist.

Workingwell · 04/12/2025 14:43

HonoriaBulstrode · 04/12/2025 14:25

Are you Scottish or Irish?

The Irish language form is Lochlann, though Lochlan, Lochlainn and Lachlann are used here too. None of the names are very commonly used though.

Agree with @TalulahJP that Lochlann isn’t pronounced the same as Lachlan.

Sullivan is a surname only to me.

sprintingupthathill · 04/12/2025 15:06

Sullivan is a very common surname in Ireland

Slinketypokey · 04/12/2025 15:09

Aussie mates tell me Lachlan is a very chavvy name over there. Equivalent of, I dunno - Tyler or something.

RaraRachael · 04/12/2025 15:32

Lachlan is nice but not shortened to Lockie as it's a ch sound, not ck.

Never heard of Sullivan as a first name. Not keen on any diminutives tbh

Lachlan Murdoch is Rupert Murdoch's son.

I prefer Lachlan to Sullivan op.

Moreteaandchocolate · 04/12/2025 15:38

I like Lachlan nn Lockie (I know one and it suits him - they pronounce it with a hard “ck” sound).
