Unusual name for the UK, is it okay?

DH and I are having number 4, we won’t find out the gender. We are 100% sure on a boy’s name but can’t decide a girls name. It was the same for the last pregnancy and when it was a girl, I wasn’t truly happy with her name so I’m trying to think more carefully this time

DH is ethnically Chinese, and I am ethnically Irish. The girl name I am considering is Chinese, Aiwen (eye-wen, a bit like Arwen but with eye as the first syllable)

The others have western first names and Chinese middle names. This baby would have the other way around

Is it too out there? Will it give them too much difficulty? I do have an Aoife so have some experience with giving a child a name they forever have to spell/ correct and she says she doesn’t mind

Lovely, better than most of the ridiculous names nowadays.

Talipesmum · 03/12/2025 12:12

I think it’s great, the name sounds nice to my ears, and my first guess at how it’s pronounced was how you described it. You’ll likely get “eye-wen” and “ay-wen” as pronunciations (like eg Aiden) but hopefully that’s not too hard to deal with.

I would probably assume it’s a girls name, though I’d not heard it before - probably the “wen” ending.

fucit · 03/12/2025 12:12

Personally, I would go with something simpler. I couldn’t be bothered with the mispronunciation.

MyMilchick · 03/12/2025 12:13

Aiwen is a lovely name, can't see how you'd have too much trouble with it either, it looks exactly how you pronounce it to me

typedupandchucked · 03/12/2025 12:13

Yeah agreed, it is a nice name, Aiwen is easily pronounced and read. There will always be someone asking the spelling though, I do feel bad for kids and adults who have to spell their name out at every appointment booking. But hey ho there’s worse problems in life to have!

Calliopespa · 03/12/2025 12:14

I don't think it's a difficult name.

Eye-wen is not difficult to pronounce.

Do you think all girls should be called Jane?

Coffeeishot · 03/12/2025 12:15

It sounds like a proper name really although it might not "go" with your other kids so if it is a she might feel the odd one out.

HopefulYankee · 03/12/2025 12:15

I think Aiwen is a beautiful name and it will go well with Aoife

Coffeeishot · 03/12/2025 12:18

Sorry I didn't read properly, it will go fine Aoife,

DoubtsAndConfusion · 03/12/2025 12:19

I have:
Rupert
Aoife
Ottie (Ottilie)
Aiwen/ Ivo

I think it's lovely.

I had an unusual Irish name and surname for years in the UK, and gave another to my UK-born DS, and everybody coped.

Starseeking · 03/12/2025 12:22

It’s lovely and goes nicely with the rest, though I’d say Rupert is the odd one out in your list!

This.

DoubtsAndConfusion · 03/12/2025 12:30

It always really bugged me that Rupert and Aoife didn’t go well at all! I think if we have a boy, Ivo ties all 4 together

Is Ivo also Chinese? Or is it Irish? I have only known it as a Croatian name, pronounced Ee-voo.

DoubtsAndConfusion · 03/12/2025 12:41

It’s actually Germanic I believe. Just the name we’ve loved for a boy 🤷🏻‍♀️

Pronounced eye-vo

Blarn · 03/12/2025 12:50

It's really nice, simple but pretty.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 03/12/2025 12:51

I don't like it.... I just don't think it goes with the other names. And in my (very childish) mind I am saying "I wen-ta the shops"

Ivo is super cute. Makes me think of Ivor the Engine and do a little welsh accent.

Maybe look at other Irish girls names.... Saoirse, Siobhan, Niamh, Roisnin, Erin? Oh Erin is nice!

Pronounced eye-vo

I like it better with that pronounciation. It's softer.

EINSEINSNULL · 03/12/2025 12:53

I don't dislike it, but I can see some people reading it as Arwen, especially when handwritten.

BlossomLeaves · 03/12/2025 13:01

Lovely name Star
