Unusual name for the UK, is it okay?

DH and I are having number 4, we won’t find out the gender. We are 100% sure on a boy’s name but can’t decide a girls name. It was the same for the last pregnancy and when it was a girl, I wasn’t truly happy with her name so I’m trying to think more carefully this time

DH is ethnically Chinese, and I am ethnically Irish. The girl name I am considering is Chinese, Aiwen (eye-wen, a bit like Arwen but with eye as the first syllable)

The others have western first names and Chinese middle names. This baby would have the other way around

Is it too out there? Will it give them too much difficulty? I do have an Aoife so have some experience with giving a child a name they forever have to spell/ correct and she says she doesn’t mind

I don't like it.... I just don't think it goes with the other names. And in my (very childish) mind I am saying "I wen-ta the shops"

Ivo is super cute. Makes me think of Ivor the Engine and do a little welsh accent.

Maybe look at other Irish girls names.... Saoirse, Siobhan, Niamh, Roisnin, Erin? Oh Erin is nice!

Aoife, Aiwen and Ottie go really well together, Aoife and Aiwen especially

ChocolateCinderToffee · 03/12/2025 14:50

I think it’s lovely!

MartinCrieffsHat · 03/12/2025 15:59

@LighthouseLED , Eye-wen is not difficult to pronounce. If I saw the name Aiwen I'd guess it was Ay-wun. I might read it as Alwen.
If I heard Aiwen, I wouldn't know how to spell it and would need to ask.

I like the name Jane. Only 29 Janes registered in 2024.

@DoubtsAndConfusion , the name is fine. User-submitted name Aiwen - Behind the Name?

OrdinaryGirl · 03/12/2025 16:05

I like it. Google says it means ‘noble and cultured’. Easy to say and goes really well with Aoife. 🩷

ExperiencedContractor · 03/12/2025 16:08

As a name, I think it’s fine. I haven’t heard it before but the pronunciation is obvious and it sounds nice.

But,
”The others have western first names and Chinese middle names. This baby would have the other way around”
I think this would feel awkward for your fourth child, as they grow older and feel singled out from their siblings!

Yeah agreed, it is a nice name, Aiwen is easily pronounced and read. There will always be someone asking the spelling though, I do feel bad for kids and adults who have to spell their name out at every appointment booking. But hey ho there’s worse problems in life to have!

I have a very ordinary, traditional, old fashioned name and people still spell it wrongly.

MartinCrieffsHat · 03/12/2025 16:11

Don't trust 'google'. My search engine said it was a boy's name and Welsh.

Mandarinaduck · 03/12/2025 17:04

I think Aiwen is lovely.
It's a bit different from the style of your other children's names, would be my only reservation.

user2848502016 · 03/12/2025 17:46

I love it, I think the biggest risk will be people not reading it properly and thinking it’s Alwen or Arwen but doesn’t really matter does it

4thbabynamehelp · 03/12/2025 18:43

We are also choosing a name for our 4th baby and wrestling with mixing cultural names, so I sympathise.
I actually think Rupert and Ottilie go really well together, I don't think they jarr at all.
Edit: just realised it was Rupert and Aoife you thought clashed, I don't think they clash either. The fact all the name are so different makes it easier for Aiwen to slot in.

I think it's great that you're picking names you love and not just sticking to a theme, it's interesting. I like Aiwen but people will assume Alwen or Arwen, but if you're used to Aoife being mispronounced I'm sure it won't be a bit issue.
It's Chinese but not obviously so, in the sense that it doesn't stand out as odd amongst the other names. It sounds nice with Aoife.

BaronessBomburst · 03/12/2025 18:53

I really like it!

I saw your post! My first was nearly Cillian (or Tadgh) but decided not to Irish in the end. I love quite a few Irish girls names so I think in your situation, I personally would probably go Irish. Emerald/ Emmy is sweet and you seem to love it.

Irish girls names I like:
Caoimhe (but the spelling outside of Ireland is tricky)
Fiadh (more common now)
Bridie (I knew someone really cool with this name years ago and it has stuck with me, more modern)

Thank you for your kind words and good luck with number 4

Tadgh Isn't it Tadhg?

Newsenmum · 03/12/2025 19:57

It’s beautiful

theunbreakablecleopatrajones · 03/12/2025 19:57

It's very nice.

I'd probably assume it was Welsh, if I just saw it written down!

Haha, yes it is. I should definitely proof read 🙃

MartinCrieffsHat · 03/12/2025 20:17

I was reading an article earlier and a name was misspelt throughout. It happens.

littlebilliie · 03/12/2025 20:18

Love it

blankcanvas3 · 03/12/2025 20:24

It’s a gorgeous name and goes really well with your other DC’s names. One of my daughters has an Irish name much more complicated in terms of pronunciation vs spelling but we muddle through

user1492757084 · 04/12/2025 09:04

Aiwen is gorgepus.

I hope she's a girl and you get to use that name.

Moreteaandchocolate · 04/12/2025 15:43

It’s lovely ☺️
