We have baby number two on the way, unsure on the gender but which of these girl names do you like?

Nell
Elodie (could still be Nell for short)
Eleanora
Nora
Etta
Violet
Iris

Iris

Pidgeypidge · 19/11/2025 10:39

We had similar names for our daughter. Elodie, Iris and Violet were on my list. I also liked Eleanor/Ella. If I was to have another girl, I'd go with Iris x

Iocanepowder · 19/11/2025 10:44

Quite like Nora.

I would avoid Eleanora as it could end up being shortened to Ellie and they are everywhere.

Chichichochi · 19/11/2025 10:46

I love the name Nell, but it isn’t popular on here.

LooseGooseMoose · 19/11/2025 10:48

Iris and Nora

Needmorelego · 19/11/2025 10:48

Violet or Iris
(Violet is my favourite of those two)

Emanwenym · 19/11/2025 11:03

In order:
Nell - like if not short for anything
Iris - nice
Violet - nice, but tends to be 'Vilet'
Etta - Ate a...?
Norah is better.
Elodie (Nell for short) - not intuitive. Elodie is bland and will be Ellie
Eleanora - Eleanor is much nicer.

MonsterBookOfTyson · 19/11/2025 11:15

Elodie and Nell

PInkyStarfish · 19/11/2025 11:17

Nell - no. Sounds like a barmaid in olden times.
Elodie (could still be Nell for short)- ok.
Eleanora - lovely.
Nora - ok
Etta - not keen
Violet - not keen
Iris - ok

PInkyStarfish · 19/11/2025 11:17

What about Eloise?

Needmorelego · 19/11/2025 11:19

Maybe I am missing something but why would Nell be short for Elodie?
They don't sound remotely the same.
It's like saying "Sarah but Jane for short" to me 🤔🤷

Emanwenym · 19/11/2025 11:32

@Needmorelego , it's more like
Moll(y) short for Olivia, or Adeline, Paddy for short, or Alana, Sal for short.

Elodie -> El ->Nell

@Emanwenym none of those example shortenings make any sense to me.
Why would Molly be short for Olivia?
I've never understood the Daisy short for Margaret thing either 🤷

I think it's because Marguerite is the French for Daisy!

HibiscusCoffee · 19/11/2025 12:28

I like Elodie best, then Iris.
The others I am not so keen on especially Nell, Nora and Etta as stand alone names.

LeticiaMorales · 19/11/2025 12:28

I like them all, apart from Nell.
It just sounds unpleasant to me.

Emanwenym · 19/11/2025 12:29

@Needmorelego , that's because they are contrived.

Margaret - > Marguerite (a daisy) - > Daisy

heartsinvisiblefury · 19/11/2025 12:29

Nell is BEAUTIFUL!

Needmorelego · 19/11/2025 12:45

Oh now that actually makes sense !

Emanwenym · 19/11/2025 12:48

@Needmorelego , go back to great-great-granny's age, and names like Margaret, Elizabeth and Mary were reused a lot within families.
You might share a first name with your mother, grandmother, several cousins, friends, so you'd be known by a different diminutive. The various Margarets might be Margaret, Maggie, Margo, Madge, Maisie, Daisy, etc.

😊
It's why Queen Margarethe of Denmark is called Daisy by her friends.

Northcoastmama · 19/11/2025 12:50

What about Leonora?

Needmorelego · 19/11/2025 13:08

@Emanwenym yes you often hear of an elderly great aunt passing away and everyone discovering that the name you knew her by for 98 years was never actually her name 😂😂

Calliopespa · 19/11/2025 13:18

Chichichochi · 19/11/2025 10:46

I love the name Nell, but it isn’t popular on here.

I like Nell - but I do prefer it as short for Helena.

I also like Violet.

I think Ellie has been a bit flogged to death in recent years, and I am not sure it's really pretty enough to justify it.

I am not a fan of Elodie, perhaps unfairly so, but it has a very heavy "Loddy" sound to me.

Of all these names, I personally would go for Etta short for Henrietta!

LoudPlumDog · 19/11/2025 13:23

Etta
