Do you feel the difference between these two names? What vibe do you get for each? Thanks

I know two Ivans and they both pronounce it Ee-van.

Tiddlywinkly · 15/11/2025 14:28

Evan

South Wales. Ioan is the currently trendy form.

loan is pronounced very differently though, although it is another John derivative.

PanderBare · 15/11/2025 14:51

@KnickerlessParsons , not to Ifan, Iwan and Ieuan, which are other Welsh forms of John.

They're different but not very different - Siôn is very different.

With Ivan my first thought is Ivan the terrible, so I much prefer Evan. But no one will know if it's pronounced Ee-van or Eh-van so be prepared for that.

We have an 8 year old Evan - 100% of people have known how to say it so far. It’s a very well known name.

Ivan seems very harsh to me for some reason. Clearly I vote Evan 😍 perfect friendly neutral name to suit any sort of person.

I will say OP, there are a lot of E names around - Evan, Ethan, Ewan, Eddie, then girls Evie, Eva, Elsie etc on and on forever. Trendy!

PanderBare · 15/11/2025 16:09

@lostintranslation148 , I've never heard Evan said as Ee-van, but I've heard Evans said more like Yvans.

A friend has a brother called Ivan (Eye-vun) but I'd say Yv-aan otherwise.

Evan James wrote the national anthem with his son James James.

My nephew is called Evan. ( (Ev van).
Ive not seen or heard anyone struggle with it in 30 years!

Iwiicit · 15/11/2025 19:24

Definitely Evan, never heard anyone say Eevan. I know an Yvan, he is from Brittany.

Ooogle · 15/11/2025 19:28

PanderBare · 15/11/2025 14:07

Ifan is YV-ann not Ee-van

Where I live it’s not Yv Ann, it’s definitely more like ee-van

Like e-bike or email? I think not.

PanderBare · 15/11/2025 19:44

@Ooogle ,There's a tendency for people to shift the stress in some words, and by YV-ann, I'm trying to convey that the Yv bit is stressed not the an. Ee-van would rhyme with Leanne, but Evan/Yvan/ifan and Leeanne don't rhyme, same as Mari and Marie, or Jolly and Jolie, don't.

Put together, it is “ee-van”, with the stress on the first syllable.' is misleading.
It's 'ɪv:an.

I have synaesthesia so I see Evan as a leafy green colour and Ivan as silver grey.
There will be fewer Ivan’s when he goes to school.
Have you considered Ivor, or is that too reminiscent of the tank engine?

I am Slavic and like nn Vanya occasionally… Ivor is very Scandinavian…the name Ivan or Evan is not occasional and honours someone from my family… it is just that I prefer Slavic varian Iván much less.

Oh no, it wouldn’t rhyme with Leanne . It’s ee (but not a y sound which if I’m thinking in Welsh is like uh ) and then van. I think I equally stress them both. That’s how the name is said in my bit of wales anyways.

girljulian · 15/11/2025 21:59

I love Ivan. Evan is too common.

ThatAlertLilacFinch · 15/11/2025 22:05

I like Ivan, it’s quite popular in Scotland I think.

I know an ee-VAN but spelled Ivan. He’s Slavic.

Do you mean too common as in its a name used la lot or you think is a' common as muck' word?
I only know one Evan, therefore its not too common for me.

PanderBare · 16/11/2025 16:33

@Ooogle , It’s ee (but not a y sound which if I’m thinking in Welsh is like uh ) and then van. Why would I explain it in Welsh letters???
I added the IPA.
Y as in English - like in Teddy, which isn't said as Ted-ee, is it.
