Betsy, wouldn't spell it with an ie ending.

Parsleysalad · 27/10/2025 17:34

Charlotte nn Lottie

That was my reaction too! Betsy is the only one I really like, although Sylvie isn't bad..

Confusedmermaid1 · 27/10/2025 17:40

I picked Sylvie in the poll because I love it and DH won’t let me use it 😂 but I second Betsy with a y, so sweet.
My mum gave me a name that commonly ends Y but with an -ie e.g Molly vs Mollie and it is such a pain having to spell it out all the time and has caused no end of hassle. My bank had it spelt wrong for months despite me
continuously contacting them to
correct it! This was in the days of filling out a paper form mind 😅 doesn’t matter if it’s written in front of people they just spell it the ‘normal’ way..

MissyB1 · 27/10/2025 17:40

Betsy (not ie). Or Sylvie.

MrsMoastyToasty · 27/10/2025 17:44

Elizabeth with nn Betsy.

LotsOfSmallThings · 27/10/2025 17:49

Sylvie, love it! Also love Marnie from your list - I gave OH the choice between Marnie and Marley and he went for the latter but I still love Marnie ❤️

DidSheJustSayThat · 27/10/2025 17:52

Charlotte and then Lottie for short.

StewkeyBlue · 27/10/2025 17:54

Voted Sylvie, but Lottie a close second, or maybe equal first

DuchessOfNarcissex · 27/10/2025 17:59

In order:

Maybe:
Lottie - if short for Charlotte
Betsy
Marnie - ok but wouldn't use it
Billie- like it but it will get heard as Billy

No:
Betsie - don't like the spelling
Sylvie - not keen
Perrie - awful

Silverbirchleaf · 27/10/2025 18:01

Marnie,

Or wait until your baby is here, and then see what name suits her (which will probably be something completely different!)

Calliopespa · 27/10/2025 18:07

Joolsin · 27/10/2025 17:34

Betsy, wouldn't spell it with an ie ending.

Same: Betsy and I'd do Elizabeth on the BC.

Lottie and Betsy are fine but really are nns, so if this is for the BC and you won;t go longer then I'd go for Sylvie.

Where has this Marnie come from - and it only seems to exist on MN but it's on practically every name thread these days.

Is it short for something? And does anyone else think Marnie = Marmite Sarnie?

Doesn't Perrie need an r on the end? Perrier?

Moreteaandchocolate · 27/10/2025 18:16

Sylvie, Marnie and Lottie are nice.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 27/10/2025 18:25

@Calliopespa , it's a diminutive of Margaret. Marnie.
Hitchcock film. Marni Nixon. Marnie Simpson ...

GreyCloudsLooming · 27/10/2025 18:32

Sylvie at a push. I quite like Betsy. That spelling.

Arlanymor · 27/10/2025 18:33

Betsi - Welsh spelling.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 27/10/2025 18:43

@Arlanymor , it might work in Wales but it would look misspelt otherwise.

Actually that makes me realise I have seen it without the e on the end. I haven't heard of the Hitchcock film, but then I've only heard of Rebecca, The Birds and Psycho as I'm not a huge fan.

But Marnie Simpson I reckon is where it has kicked off from: I've never come across it IRL before a few years ago.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 27/10/2025 18:43

So you think that when you see 'Marc' do you - that it's misspelt? Or 'wrong'?

It's phonetically clear what it is... same with:

Jac
Alys
Elis

Pumpkinpuffin · 27/10/2025 19:23

I think Lottie is sweet, but give the full name Charlotte?

"When Marnie was there" 1960's novel and later Studio Ghible film.

DuchessOfNarcissex · 27/10/2025 19:24

@Arlanymor, It's more that if I heard Marc, Jac, Alys or Elis, I'd write them Mark, Jack, Alice or Ellis. The phonetic bit doesn't work for Marc and Elis.

GoldenRosebee · 27/10/2025 19:28

I voted Sylvie - it's actual name and not a nickname-name... I would say others are ok, but wouldn't voted for them. I prefer Marina nn Marnie.

Edited

I think these days most people ask how people spell things? I know a Caley, Kayleigh and a Kayley! The English phonics for Marc and Elis are close enough.
